Nitrate high

Nice! Was there a BRS investigation on nitrates with corals? Perhaps effects on the different types of coral (SPS, LPS, and Softies) would be good if there wasn’t. It would be good to get real results that shed light on what was previously thought to be true, like “high” nitrates. @Bulk Reef Supply

well here’s my “high nitrate” tank.

It is beautiful. I personally don’t have a low nitrates tank (it’s actually around what you have) but I’m just starting out. I’m glad to know that you’re having no issues with your coral and the current nitrate level. I, today, just setup my refugium to battle my nitrate levels and now I’m wondering if I wasted my time based on the looks of your tank. Any suggestions for me based on your experience?

Well I also use a Chaeto reactor from Pax Bellum. Been using it for about 2 1/2 months now with no changes in nitrate. But it grows Chaeto really well. Still wondering myself if I wasted the money on it. Also my skimmer is a little oversized and still skims dark smelly gunk.

Best advice I can give is pick a system that you know works for others and stick to it. Constantly switching products and trying the latest and greatest is not always the best route. Myself I’ve been using the full Red Sea program for the past 7-8 years.

To my eye that looks like a reading of 20ppm. Completely fine. You don’t want anything too much lower than maybe 4ppm nitrate.

You have wiggle room if you want it lowered but personally I wouldn’t bother unless I was having issues with algae and corals. Some reefs run at higher levels than others.
