Nitrate level during cycle

I have been cycling a new 120g tank, How high do I allow the nitrates to rise before doing the first water change? I am currently at 12 ppm

I would worry about nitrates during cycle.
I would monitor ammonia and nitrites, once both are zero then do a water change. Nitrates might hit 50-100 by that time.

how long have you been cycling? how did you start the cycle?

Do the water changes starting after 30 days. There is more at work here than just the N cycle, so just do them on schedule and keep the test kits away until month 4 to 6, except for ammonia.
