I have a 220 Gallon Reef that has a api nitrate reading of 5 ppm. Wondering what the advantages and disadvantages of running with a nitrate reading of that ppm? I have a mixed community tank, with macro algea in a refugium. What levels you all keep your nitrates at, and have you been successful with a higher nitrate levels? Thanks.

Theres alot of mixed feelings on this topic but when nitrate is low, it could skyrocket phosphate and cause unwanted algae blooms, you can crash your tank in a week if ur system is nutrient free , i rather have atleast 4/5 ppm of nitrate just because my system appriciates it alot better and i rather have darker fuller looking corals then skin pale sticks

Also macros keep nutrients in check so i wouldnt worry about it just try not to let it get too low if your doing water changes nd try not to let it get over 15/20 ppm or you "might" run into some problems
