Any one have an opinion on the Hana nitrate test kit? I watched the video looks a bit time consuming. I didn't see any reviews here on it, otherwise I think NYOS or Red Sea, what your thoughts?

Using Seachem of course it says 0

I just purchased the Hana Nitrate and Alkalinity tests. I plan on watching youtube later to figure them both out. I was told they are more accurate tests. I will find out soon enough. I hope we both have success with the Hana testing

Got both in the cart just cant decide which to buy

Agree with the Hanna Alk test. I also have the nitrate and i find it useful if you need a detail resolution on the results. Personally I do not used regularly due to how time consuming it is. Instead I use the Salifert test and have the Hanna for confirmation when I get an odd result.

Those of you that got the Hana which one did you get low or ultra low?

I am moving on from the Red Sea as I find it too difficult to compare the pink color on the chart to the purple color in the vial. That's my .02

Check its range before you buy it. I think its ULR that measure up to 5ppm which is very low for newer tanks. red sea pro is next best thing imo. easy to read.

BRS did a nice review on the different testing kits.
Their choice for nitrate was Nyos.
I have been using the Nyos and the only thing I don't like is the range jumps from 12 to 25 - you have to use your best guess if it's closer to 12 or 25.

Here are their other recommendations:
Calcium: Red Sea
Alkalinity: Hanna (really nice tester / fast and accurate.
Mag: Aqua Forest

Low Hanna
  • Range: 0.0 to 5.0 ppm (as NO3-) / 0.0 to 50 ppm (calculated) using dilution
  • Resolution: 0.01 ppm
  • Precision: ±0.25 ppm ±2% of reading @ 77°F (25°C) / ±2.5 ppm ±5 of calculated reading using dilution
Ultra Low
  • Range: 0 to 200 ppb
  • Resolution: 1 ppb
  • Accuracy: ±10 ppb ±4% of reading at 25°C

looks like the low Hana will work...the ultra low range will just be a bit more accurate if I interpret the above right. If my nitrate is higher than I think it is the ultra low range won't work, id bet most reefers end up with both at times.

What do people target for a mixed reef tank? I end up too low and got dyno's, over corrected and now got cyno cant win :)

Alkalinity is what you should test most often (I check it everyday and manually dose accordingly) and the Hanna checker does a great job of it. I will test with the Salifert kit from time to time - it is also very accurate.

Nitrate can be much higher than that. I keep mine at somewhere between 10 and 20.
Randy will weigh in here - I forget what he advises for today's reef tanks.
The old school was to keep both Phosphate and Nitrate a zero - but that turns out not to be ideal.

So the ultra low will go up to .200 ppm or 200 ppb unfortunately I have no clue as to where I am at now, the current test kit starts at .25 in detection

Geese I almost need both Hana's
