Honestly the only thing I can think of would be the tests are somehow wrong. Any idea I can think of wouldn't make sense given the age of the rock, lack of decaying matter, etc.

Only thing I can think of is skimmer is under preforming and cheato light was way to high for it to grow like it should and maybe my sand. I had a sand cleaning fish but it past away like 2 months ago.

How big are your fish and what do you feed them?
Any chance something is dead under the sand ?
I do agree with your assessment above, just trying to be thorough.

most of the fish are 1-3 inchs and 2 at maybe 4-6 inchs and a 9-12 inch snowflake eel. shouldn't be anything dead everything still around.

and my clam loving it don't know why lol
Had snowflake eel 25 years ago. Seems like he spent a lot of time under the sand. Might be a good idea to vacuum the sand bed when doing water changes.

lil update nitrates still high 180+ on a api test PO at .72 still trying the nopox and running refuge light about 3-5 inch off water line. Havent seen any real changes.. But have to say the hanna PO tester hands down is the easiest tester I have now lol.

A lil update no3 are starting to lower on the api test im now under 120ppm. So ill keep on trucking and get it lower.Thank you all for you tips and help.
