Nitrates at 160ppm

I'd keep changing the water until they're within safe range. I agree that they don't go down much on their own. Once the cycle is at this point, you have enough bacteria to not restart the cycle with water changes.

12g Nanoreef. Zooanthids, Ricordia, Star Polyps and two clownfish. CF Lighting, 75% actinic blue, 25% 10,000k white.

If it's for corals you want the nitrates no more than 10ppm. I'd change about 30% of the water and check again. You may have to change it quite a bit to get the numbers down. That's ok. Good luck!

If its at 40 and you do a 50% WC, they will be 20 after its done. Then it all depends on how much farther you want to take them.
Now, doing weekly WC will maintain that number. Or, you can run a DSB under the DT. Or, run an ATS. Or Carbon Dose. Or run a DeNitrator.

Are you using Prime or any other dechlorinator, sometimes they can give you false posititve results(usually the reddest of the red on a test kit).

You could try bioNitatEX by JBL These works for me my nitrates Used to be 100 after using for six weeks gradually started to go down went down to 2 very pleased with them and Heavily Stocked

I use Purigen and DeNitrate by Seachem to keep mine down.

I do H2O changes to keep mine down....not to state the obvious but not only does it remove waste & unwanted nutrients from our tanks but also replaces essential elements & minerals as well
