Nitrates levels keep rising

the shrimp was only in dead in the tank for about an hour and I didn't do a water change after noticing it. my ammonia levels are at 0.07 and my nitrate levels are at 0.

I'll leave it at that.

I believe that my main problem is ovefeeding. I've done a little reading and I believe I am feeding way to much and my use of distilled water is also part of my problem. On top of these two issues I think green horn reefer is correct about my inadequate water changes. I plan to get a rodi system, feed less, look into getting a deeper sand bed, and potentially switch food.
What 'live bacteria' are you adding to your water? If you already have a cycle going I don't see why you need to keep adding bacteria. Your bioload will add the bacteria that is being pulled out.

Like everyone else suggested. Slow down and invest in a RO/DI unit (which I believe you stated you were)

Also what are you using to top off you water between changes?

I added live bacteria when I did my 60% water change. I added it because I was told by the man at the fish store that when I did such a large water change that I should use that.

Thanks you everyone for all the help. Some of your suggestions were really good and I will definitely be taking your advice. Appreciate the help!

Now I am no expert by any means but I don't believe you need to add bacteria even with a large water change. Most of your bacteria lives on the surface (like rocks and sand) and not in the water. Please correct me if I'm incorrect guys.

Advice a fella reefer gave me. Becareful who you take advice from even myself. Always research advice given to you and see what in it for the person giving you advice. Now folks are the LFS can be very helpful but be mindful they are out to make a buck so at times their advice may not always be the best.

Seems like you have a good game plan. Also remember nothing good happens quickly in saltwater.

Yes there is a large cleaning crew. About 1 dozen hermits crabs and 1 dozen snails
Your system will have many cycles through the first year, this is only one. Be patient and let nature take it's course :)
