36gal bowfront tank. 30+ lbs of dead rock, 30+lbs sand, filled with RO water from Wal-Mart. Used the shrimp method to cycle the tank. Currently amnonia is at 0....nitrites are at 0....nitrates wont come down.

Done a 7 gal water change and have some cheato from a local reefer.....its just not dropping. There was a drop with the water change, bt not as much as i would have thought

Way are you readings?
How offer are you doing water changes.
Normally water from the water machines have phos in them.
They don't use a true 5 strange rodi that u see reefers use.
They have there own filter system just to clean the water enough for us to drink

İ have a 36 bowfront also and been fighting nitrates for almost 2 weeks now .. Readings are horrible and i am really worried about my fish and corals, my reading is 40-50
Whats the numbers you have, do you have a skimmer?

You have to find the source of the nitrates before you can get control. Overfeeding is the main cause. Water changes will help but will not fix the problem. Strong protein skimming, water changes and less feeding and you should see levels go down.

We tested the water at Walmart and it was 128 TDS, which is a little below our town's water supply. We contacted maintenance, but it didn't change anything. After they checked the water filter we tested it again, same thing.

Make your own water or buy it at a LFS. The water will be much cleaner.

I agree. My city water has 20-30 nitrates so it's unusable. I buy RO from my lfs. That way I know I'm starting with good water. Good luck!!

12g Nanoreef. Zooanthids, Ricordia, Star Polyps, Acans and two clownfish. CF Lighting, 75% actinic blue, 25% 10,000k white.

Well mine is not over feeding, lol, there is nothing in the tank.

There is a skimmer, but its not producing much. ..and what it does get is more clear then anything

If you were to change 50% of your water, that would bring down your total Nitrates number by half. Thats how you can get them down quickly. Then theres always adding a Nitrate Reactor, Pellets or Carbon Dosing (aka Vodka Dosing which I still do.)
