When doing research on my reef setup I decided on a 2" bed. I used a couple of online calculators took the average and ran with that.

Just a quick thought here. Dependant on the volume of his tank and DIY skills, this came to mind when reading the Jaubert method. (with some obvious mods to gain needed flow direction from chamber 1 to 2 and out the 3rd chamber) just spitballin' here =)You may want to look into getting a sulfur denitrator. I had a nitrate level of 80 ppm and was able to reduce it down to around 5ppm in two weeks without doing any water change.
I used a simple DIY denitrator that consist of putting some sulfur prills over a plastics mesh on top of a plenum. All topped with coarse coral gravel. This denitrator was in a low flow area in my sump, but I imagine it could just as well be in a low flow area of a display tank. It is a version of option 2 at the website below:

I heard some stories about excessive sand may start pushing glass forward, in long term. It best stick to tried and tested. And yes I agree it's a bit too thick. Do you guys think I should take some out?
I love refugiums. good to hear man. once those corals get going theyll suck up to nutrients too.Well a think it's a combination of things. Added a Refugium with Chaeto about 2 months go, been dosing Red Sea no3/po4 for about 2 weeks, and water changes.
