On august 28 my nitrates tested at 40 ppm and today it tested at 5 ppm, I didn't do a water change yet and I noticed brownie sh resist algae forming on rocks that's what prompted me to test. I'm puzzled as to how did the nitrates drop so much and I have no protein skimmer

Ok that is normal as it has most likely just cycled then. Here on out I would test twice per week for a few more months. The brown algae sounds like diatoms which is normal and after that you will most likely se Cyano and/or green hair algae which will run its course and go away as well. Just part of a new tank.

Your tank cycled. Now comes brown and green algae. No skimmer? Just keep up with water changes. Its normal.

Oh ok thanks I kinda figured as much just the nitrate drop confused me but will def minister and keep up with water changes
