Hi guys quite some time ago I so ppl were using siporax to help with nitrates so I put about 6 ltr in my sump in two different areas half in first compartment of sump with skimmer other half in return pump section of sump .i understand the slower the flow over the siporax the better.
So with that in mind if the flow through or over the siporax was slightly more could this cause the siporax to hold or create nitrate any input would be appreciated thank you.

Don't think it would become a N03 factory.

Thanks for the reply .... I decided to move it into the lowest flow area of my sump so hopefully will become more efficient.

Hi guys I'm back my nitrates are quite high about 50 but my phosphates are low zero according to deltec phosphate kit and I don't have any unsightly algae so should I up my feeding to encourage phos as I no the two of them work hand in hand when levels are correct as corals need them any advice welcome.

Hi a short vid

Hi, hopefully more experienced reefers will jump on but in the meantime I'll try to help a little if I can. By siporax do you mean the ceramic rings? If so they are media for de-nitrifying bacteria to colonise so more about keeping cycle stable than reducing nitrates. Of course having those controlled will keep nitrates down a bit as well. I just have live rock and chaeto in my marine tanks sumps along with the skimmers but I use those for freshwater tanks and while they need some flow to keep the bacteria aerated and alive it's not as high as the flow in parts of the sump (where the water comes down from the bulkhead is a little turbulent for that). I'd say they'd be fine lower down in the first chamber out of the harshest and most direct rush of water and also in any subsequent chambers. If you think about the amount of flow through a cannister filter that's what you're looking for in the sump. The LFS I work in has some siperax in every sump chamber on their freshwater systems and I have it in my external canisters on freshwater tanks as the main media. Are you growing chaeto in your sump or ornamental macro algae in display? Running a skimmer? That all helps a lot with nitrates, I never get over 10 and I don't use anything to reduce chemically, just biological with live rock and chaeto and mechanical with the skimmer. In freshwater I also run well under 10 between siporex in canisters and heavy planting :)

I understand that it is used a lot in freshwater systems .
But seen a few threads on it for reef system to
I also run Apf 600 deltec skimmer in sump
50kg live rock in main tank
Cheato in sump also miracle mud in sump
And fr509 deltec reactor with 1ltr of row a phos in it
Thanks for the info AZL

Ah cool, as I thought it was info you already had, just thought if not it might help as no one had answered as yet ;)
