Hey everyone, our 90 gallon tank is spiking nitrites. Fish are starting to look bad. Nems and mushrooms look fine. Question for the QT tank, fresh made salt water or combination of high nitrite water and fresh salt water? And all other suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

First off, welcome to R2R! #WelcometoR2R

Nitrite is typically not an issue with saltwater....it is for freshwater tanks, but not saltwater. Ammonia is the poison, that in low concentrations, is dangerous for our fish. How old is the tank? And did it completely cycle? Any other changes before you noticed this change?

The tank has been running for 7-8 months, the only change was new fish. Everything else was established.

Welcome to R2R!

You said the tank has been up for 7-8 months... How many new fish did you add? What fish were in the tank before? I would check the age of your test kit or perhaps have a LFS do a quick test to confirm high nitrates. I would also be cautious to not overfeed which may be a bigger issue that adding too many fish at once.

Good Luck!
