Yes, there have been posts on this new data for a couple of months. It is interesting, but I'm not sure if it is what happens in our aquaria or not. It might be, but it might just be another "possible" process, of which bacteria have a huge number that likely remain to be established.

Alright it seems that two groups were puzzled at about the same time and working on it. They then (partly) joined forces resulting in two separate publications at the same day.

The situation about the two groups is describec on the Radboud University site:

"Tijdens dit onderzoek kwamen de microbiologen van de Radboud Universiteit erachter dat collega’s uit Wenen (Oostenrijk) - waar Sebastian Lücker zijn PhD-onderzoek voltooide - soortgelijke bevindingen hadden. Momenteel is Lücker een van de Radboud Excellence Initiative fellows aan de Radboud Universiteit. ‘Er is veel expertise over Nitrospira in Wenen’, vertelt hij, ‘en daarom wilden we graag met de collega’s daar samenwerken. We publiceren onze resultaten nu tegelijkertijd, in twee afzonderlijke papers in dezelfde editie van Nature.’"
