Hi everyone, and merry Xmas!
I have a rather odd situation going on, where I’ve noticed my alk and calcium are not being consumed as it should, which I also feel is impacting coral growth.
Tank is my parents 90 gallon that has been running for over a decade, any corals that were in it died about 5 or 6 years ago. (Due to lack of knowledge). Most of our fish made it at least!
lighting is a 6 bulb t5ho fixture I purchased online. Will post pic
along with some bulbs we bought at one of our LFS, not sure what brand they were. At the time I didn’t know too much about lighting, and I had to buy 6 bulbs because I had dropped our tank top and broke our previous 4 bulb setup…. I remember they didn’t have any bulbs in stock at the time but they were able to get me some the next day for a pretty low price.
I got my hands on the tank early 2020 and I’ve been slowly (not too slowly, I admit) adding corals/inverts to make it a fully established mixed reef.
Everything’s been going rather well *knock on wood* , since this is such an established tank, I feel it has allowed for some wiggle room during my learning curve.
During the year I’ve lost :
-Around 4 rock flower nems, one or two actually died. Other 2 disappeared somewhere never to be seen again. Hoping they’re behind rock work alive lol.
- 2 torches that died within a week.
- 3 of my sps corals that were supposed to be very hardy corals. The first to go was my purple stylo, or a smooth acro that my buddy gifted me. Not sure if the acro was dead first since it was one of those acros that doesn’t have any polyp extension, I never really noticed it dying until it was covered in algae.
So here’s the reason I feel the need to share the corals I have lost during this time. I suspect the issue may be my the bulbs, or maybe the actual fixture? Which I doubt it’s the fixture, leaning more on the bulbs.
Not sure if lighting can be the cause of the corals dying, the reason for alk/calcium not to be consumed, and the slow growth?

Apart from new corals looking great. Nothing but my Xenia’s and gsp are growing at a noticeable rate. I have 1 acan growing a new polyp and some zoas that have sprouted new polyps here and there.
Anyone can help me?
