I didn’t know where to post this, but since my reef is 100% SPS I thought this thread was the appropriate place.

I am wonder why my rocks don’t look like there is much life on them. My reef has been going since October 2016, but my rock work hasn’t colored as much as other people’s reefs. My rock was dry when I started, and it got brown and a bit darker, but there doesn’t seem to be the biodiversity on the rock. No coraline algae of different colors and densities, etc. I have sponges (yellow, pineapple, purple) but not a lot of color. What am I doing wrong or not doing?

Well there are a lot of factors here. First off, you started off with dry rock, as did I. That being said, we are already limitied on the amount of living organisms on our rock because we didn't bring in the diversity that live rock does. As you add corals from different sources you will get that diversity you want. Also, your reef isn't that old. Some of those deep purple rocks that you see have been established for years. You will get that in time as long as your parameters are stable and at the right levels.

Been just over a year my tank has been running and i also have very little color as well. Over the last few months i have noticed some reds and purple patches here and there. Ithought there was something wrong for a long time but i see it all coming together now.
