I had never seen that before. Definitely not in my price range. My guess is Nitrate is something where a specific value is not that important (compared to a range). Or that Nitrate is difficult to test accurately. I mean accuracy is what you are really looking for.

thanks,as always you come up with an answer.it's certainly not $220 important to me.you would think they would come up with a cheaper solution for us regular people.

I knew you meant a regular old checker, but found that interesting. They also have a low Ammonia test but only for freshwater. There may simply just not be demand. I am sure you saw what happened with their freshwater Copper checker. Suddenly there was a need and they quickly ran tests and found they could market it for saltwater. That was based on the work of hobbyists which is very cool.

The issue is at least partly interference from chloride. They say they may come out with one, but interference is a concern.

Unfortunately, the Hanna nitrate tester is for freshwater use only.
According to the product description on their web site:

***NOTE: Chloride above 100 mg/L will cause a negative interference with the nitrate chemistry. We do not recommend the HI96728 for measuring nitrate in saltwater.

The HI96728 portable photometer for nitrate-nitrogen measurement uses an adaptation of the cadmium reduction method to measure concentrations up to 30.0 mg/L.

The link refers to a freshwater version of the test. It is not recommended fortwater.

Chloride ion inhibits the reduction of nitrate to nitrite. If you don’t correct for this, nitrate concentration will appear to be much lower than it really is. I looked into Hanna’s chemistry and it reads zero about at 5 ppm nitrate in saltwater. In principle you cold use it for high nitrates if you generate a calibration curve. I have not done enough work on it yet to recommend it.
