Hey everyone,

I have a red sea max 250. The tank is about 65 gal with a with a reefledlights.com set of lights.
12 cree-xte high noon cool white 5-6k
15 cree-xte premium cool white 7.5k
39 cree-xte d36/7 Royal blue
6 3 watt cree xpe blue 465-475nm
12 violet uv led p2n-u 410-420 nm 700ma
3 xp-e red
3 xp-e green

My lights ramp up and down. Blues go up to 55% from 730 am to 930 pm whites go up to 45% from 9am-830 pm and uv's go up to 45% from 630 am-11pm with my high noons only on for 15 min a day atm at 45%
These lights have been set up like this for well over 8 month's

salinity 1.35
Alk 8-9
cal400-450
mg 1350 This is rock solid and does not move. That being said I am raising it slowly to 1600 to try and get try and get rid of a little algae I have.
ph swings a little 8.3-8.65
temp swing between 76-78.5
I dose zeo lps ammino's, zeo sponge power Bionic 2 part alk and ca and tech m mag. A few days ago I decided to does alk at night and ca and mg in the am to try and help with my ph swing.
My flow is the 2 stock pump's and 2 MP10's. All my corals look happy but most of my sps's do not get any polyp extension during the day. I do have a few pieces that get a little but for the most part once my lights go out then I get great extension. I am not sure what will cause this. I have even tried shutting my uv led's to see if they didn't like that. I have purchase corals from my lfs that shows great polyp extension during the day and within 2 weeks I lose it.

Here are a few crappy iphone pics.

Please let me know what if any more info you need and what your thoughts are on this issue

Thank's

Try turniing your whites down. Salinity at 1.035 is way to high. Drop to 1.026.

Sorry my salinity is 1.028 atm I normally keep it at 34/35 ppt.

I am going to work on bringing it down next couple of days. Do you think that is my polyp problem? I don't see how that would only effect my corals in the day time.

I will give it a shot. I don't get any polyp extension until all my lights are off including my blues.
Thanks

Just changed the programing in my apex to have my whites max out at 35%.

I would suspect the flame angel before any other reason even a nip every now and then is enough to keep corals from extending their polyps during daylight hours. It's the reason why you'll rarely see much polp extension from SPS corals when diving. The other most likely cause would be red bugs, examine closely for those.

I'm not counting the flame angel out but I never see him nip anything ever. I just looked at my corals very close and no bugs that I can see.

IME, some acros extend a ton during the day, some extend some, and I have some that only extend at night. I guess every coral is different. LOVE the tank though

Fishes always misbehave when you're not watching them.

Thanks everyone. It's frustrating when you know you are missing something

Agree with peter 505 Of all my acros 2 of them only polyp at night. Granted i only have 8 acros though

ANNNNd i take that back, i see none of yours are polyping at all during the day. Try squirting some mysis over them see if they react to it.

Thanks again everyone. I have been dosing amminos and do that normally in the evening. Some one mentioned that maybe I have trained them to extend at the end of the day because thats when I feed . Makes sense. Guess we will see.

I blame the flame.

I've tried multiple times to keep them and they always nip. I get no polyp extension when I keep them.

I think it may be the UV lights. You need to be very careful with running UV. MH bulbs have the UV protective glass to greatly limit the amount of UV emitted. I would recommend only running your UV lights for an hour or two. That many hours of pure UV pounding the corals is not something they will like. Give it a try and see how things respond, I think this will greatly help.

Also as others have mentioned some SPS just don't extend there polyps during the day.

i would bet money its the flame. im going threw this with mine now. Try keeping the lights off for an extended period (over night) and watch the tank as soon as the lights come on. after about 5 min he will nip. i was in denial too bc a flame angle is my all time favorite fish but a no no unless you have a really big tank with really big colonies where you and the colony wont notice the nip
