After this early snow storm here in ct I'm without power and without heat. I have a battery backup for my vortech and I've rapped my tanks with blankets but it's not going to be enough since I have no clue when the power is going back on and I'm hearing reports of up to a week. My neighbor has a wood stove, would I be able to heat up some salt water and swap out a couple of gallons at a time in the tank? I'd be heating it up in a stainless steel pot, I also have aluminum if that would be better. Please help me out.

Also I'm sitting in a parking lot to postthis since I dont have cell service at home either, lol. So if the answers come quick that would be awesome! Thanks in advance.

Best thing would be to go to radio shack or similar and get an inverter for you car, then depending on size you can get a power head in their for airating and hopefully a heater.

good luck

I've got the vortech going, thats Joe I got through Irene, but no heat and no one has any inverters or generators at all. The inverter I had wasn't working and I never got around to replacing it. Heating the water is th only thing I can think of but not sure if heating it inthe pot would taint the water at all.

Could bring fish and corals to my house, I have generator for circulation and heat.

it would just be a big temp changes evreytime you pour it in.. would be no stability to it.. and time inbtween doing it may be to much..

That would be your best bet to try and get temp stable and some type of current flowing I would try RC there reefclub forums I have seen a lot of activity from there CT club maybe someone can helpout. I have a friend goin through the same situation since last night luckily for him he has a generator runnin.

I thought about seeing if anyone could house my stuff but most of the fish are hiding so I'm not sure I could catch them and I have red bugs on my sps. I appreciate the offer though.

I didnt go to the club forum on RC because it's too slow on my phone

Kerosene heaters can keep your room toasty for hours. I invested in one just in case. Hope everything is cool with your tank. Sorry hope everything is warm with your tank

Kerosene heaters are the worst option in a house period.
besides the odor you have the carbon monoxide issue

A properly maintained kerosene heater designed for indoor use shouldn't be an issue. I know we used to use them a lot.
