if you didnt have room for a sock in your sump what would you use to catch trash?

I don't use one. I find my skimmer picks alot of the detritus up, when I use a sock I get cleaner skimmate. Generally I never need one, I also keep a powerhead mixing the sump so no detritus settles there.

the sump im using has an in-let for the down pipes(i could cut it out and rework some pipe)but if i dont have to i really dont want to.a buddy said to put come sponge in one of the cambers.an it would act like a sock.
my skimmer works great but im seeing more junk in the water lately

the pipes are to long and i cant get my hand in their any way.but thanks for the idea.

Is your tank rr (drilled), or do you use a overflow box w/u-tube? I don't use a filter sock either and I have an overflow w/ u-tube. I buy a large sheet of filter pad and cut it to fit inside my overflow. I change it out every 2 days. I just throw out the dirty and put a new one in. For $5 i get 40 days worth(20 pieces).

Cut the pipe close to the top and put a coupling in without glue. When needed just pull apart.

mevstheworld;its a 120 w/h twin corner over flows.i like the idea of putting the filter pad in the over flow.what kind do you use?
wicked demon:i live in fla i dont wear socks much, they dont look very good with sandals.
uchin;im going to be changing out my sump in the next few month few months,so i dont wank to start chopping up yet.just looking for a quick fix.

:squigglemouth:Ok, I have passed this thread several times today, and every time I find myself thinking,"why, are your shoes too tight?":xd:

lol I was going to say "Go barefoot!"

I feed a ton so that is why I use a sock. I also have no rock, sand or critters in my sump so I don't want detritus settling in there. It is not a necessity though so if you plan on changes with your sump I suggest going mev's route or just run without.

.

This is the exact one I use, but I'm sure there are several different brands that will do the same. Just make sure and get a nice size sheet and cut what ever you need from it. This one comes 18"x30", so it lasts awhile.

I was just saying In My Experience socks are more trouble than they are worth. Just keep a powerhead in your sump to keep the detritus suspended and your skimmer will take care of it. Then once a month or at each water change siphon out anything in left in the sump. This is much easier than changing a sock everyday or every two days. And if you go on vacation or leave home for a few days you won't have to worry about the sock.

its not the sump, its the fact that i have a sand sifter thats driving me nuts, hes always mixing everthng up and i have a large bio load.so im getting some specs in the display tank.do you know anything about uv sanitizers?
