Anyone try one of these or anything similar? I do frequent water changes but I feel I’m not suctioning enough of the gravel.

Curries myself. I want a substrate vacuum that recycles the water back in the tank.

Me too! My only concern is releasing too much bacteria. I wonder if the filters on them are any good or if they cause murky water

You can always siphon into a filter sock into your sump, or into a bucket and reuse the water.

I do auto water changes, so sometimes when I just want to clean my substrate, I'll put a filter sock in my sump and run a siphon line into it and clean to my heart's content. Give that a try, I think you'll be happy.

Genius!

I have one of those devices and another brand one also. The device pictured above works pretty well. I used it to along with a razor blade to clean my glass. I did not have a sump on the tank, so this was a good alternative.
I have also clamped a filter sock onto a 5 gallon bucket and ran my syphon hose into the sock. In the bucket I had a small pump plugged into a remote controlled outlet. As I syphoned the tank water into the filter sock and the bucket filled, I would turn on the pump and put the water back into the tank. I would probably use this method even if I had a sump just in case the filter sock slipped and spilled the contents. This way I would not be out but 5 gallons of water at the most.

I just siphon the gravel with a manual gravel vac and what on it to clear up before I drop the sand back to the bottom. Simply crimping the hose is cheap, easy, and has worked for me for years.
