I did a test to see how effective carbon dosing was using basic distilled vinegar 5%. Before dosing a 5 gallon HD bucket with 14 lbs LR by randomly dumping an unknown amount of vinegar into it, the test came out with the following results:

March 8th:
NH3 - 0.80 via RedbSea Marine Care Kit
NO3 - 48 ppm via Hannah

Today, March 10th
Both are zero. Both tested with RedSea. NO3 doesn't even have the slightest pink in it.

Is it possible for carbon dosing to be that effective?

Hard to say what happened in an experiment like this.

Just curious, why would you dump in an unknown amount?
It's LR sitting around in the tub and I wanted to see what would happen to the ammonia and nitrate. No other reason. Glad I did it because now I wonder if products like Prime are actually needed.

Prime likely does nothing useful for ammonia or nitrite or nitrate.

Adding vinegar certainly will use up N as you get a bacterial bloom.

So Prime is just a gimmick product?

I expect it does a fine job on chlorine, and nothing for nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia.

This has more on ammonia:

Here's my analysis to suggest it is not doing anything for nitrate:
