I bought this coral from my lfs today. They said that they don’t know what kind of nps it is. Can anyone help identify it.

I will admit, this is similar to my Button Scoly at night when it hits feeding mode.

Is it some sort of Denro? Here's a pic of it when it is closed.

Will that survive in a reef tank?

Yes, I have about a dozen and they’ve done great for months now. I have a mixed reef, so I have them at the bottom and the top of the tank (probably wouldn’t recommend the top if you have an SPS dominant reef). They seem to like a bit more flow. NPS (obviously) so you gotta feed occasionally if they aren’t catching food

What kind of balanophyllia is that? Also, do they split like anemones?

They don’t split like anemones, but I’m not positive on how or if they pop out new heads, only spawn, or what. So far they’ve all stayed single polyps

I believe they generally do come from deeper waters, but how deep exactly I think depends on what type of balanophyllia it is and where in the ocean it’s collected (Australia, Indo, etc)

These pages have some info - since they’re vendors these are more likely (not guaranteed though) to be the types we find available in the hobby:

It looks like said above Blanophyllia. I had 2 of these in my nps tank along with 3 rhizos and lots of sun corals and dendros. The blanos and rhizos never split or grew new ones while the others grew like mad. If they spawned I never saw it, and if they did they didnt attach anywhere they could grow.

Yeah I had 3. 2 Were purchased healthy and remained healthy and happy. 1 was surrendered to the lfs and it continued down hill. I took it home fragged off the dead or dying half and nursed it back to health. It steadily improved growing back the half it lost but smaller. Took about 2 years for it to look normalish again.
