So I've got a random knocking sound coming from my tank. I'm reasonably sure it's not a mantis/pistol as I've kept pistol's in the past and know what they sound like, this is more of a dull knock like rapping on a sheet of plastic.
Any idea if any of the following are capable of making noise?
Coral beauty
Melanarus Wrasse (no it's not him cracking snails)
McCosker Wrasse
Purple dottyback
Royal Gramma
Orange spot goby
Pair of Occelaris clowns
Lawn mower blenny
Fire shrimp

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Do any of the fish suck at the water surface? As I'm typing this my Foxface keeps kissing the surface making a noise that might be comparable. I keep telling him to stop but he won't listen. Now I have to wonder what's worse, a fish that won't listen or the fact that I'm talking to the fish.;Facepalm

The Melanarus does and it's definitely not that.

I'm pretty sure the melanarus is training me to feed him on command because he normally does it to get my attention when he's hungry

Do you have any hermits or large snails? My large turbo snails make a very similar noise when they are climbing the glass in the corner and their shell bumps the glass.
I do have some hermits and turbos but none anywhere near the glass at the moment.

I've kept Striped Raphael cat fish (Platydoras armatulus) and they were quite noisy, they buzz (by grinding their pectoral fin bones in the sockets) and grunt (by taking in air) so I've been doing some more reading on fish noise and how they make various sounds. https://dosits.org/animals/sound-production/how-do-fish-produce-sounds/

If I had to guess it sounds like swim bladder drumming. I've recently moved the fish into a new (larger) tank and as such they're staking out new territories. Watching closely the sound seems to be emanating from the group of rocks where the purple dottyback and orange spot goby have taken up residence. I've notice every so often the purple dottyback seems stop, stick its pectoral fins down at a 45deg angle and flare its gill covers and this action seems to coincide with the noise but it happens very quickly and I'm not sure if it's making the noise or responding to it...... I'll try get a video but it's infrequent and unpredictable so wish me luck lol
