On these Waterbox systems, what is the recommended location of the water level in the overflow box?

I try to get the level below the emergency (Left red line) and somewhere near the top of the strainer (right red line) while keeping the system quiet. The problem is when I do a water change or shut my pumps off to feed, I have to play the adjustment game with the gate valve for some reason.

I have had this tank for six months and I constantly have to adjust the gate valve to either quiet it down or adjust the level so it's not too high. I am admittedly not very experienced with this type of thing and would love some of your professional advices. Pictures and Video posted below.

Thanks!

This is the valve almost tuned and not even wide open.

Mine is virtually silent and I almost NEVER need to adjust it. My return pump turns off several times a day to feed the fish and I have no trouble. You want the water level to be high enough that just a tiny bit of water trickles into the emergency drain. The water should be well above he strainer or you could get a vortex sucking air in causing noise and inconsistent performance.

Another possible cause could be the water spilling into the overflow box from the main tank. The higher the flow from the return, the faster water spills over and can cause some noise from splashing in the back.

Thanks! I gave this a shot and so far no problems! I was under the assumption that no water was supposed to be hitting the secondary overflow unless there was a problem.

I have been noticing that the water will get to the overflow and trickle then after some time reduce back down to just above the strainer. No noise to speak of.

Thanks again.
