So people pay a lot of cash for show fish and corals. Wells here's my show snail, then guys the size of an Eisenhower dollar and came in as a hitch hiker. What other non standard show animals does everyone have?

What type is snail is that , it looks blue

How about my bazaar green ball of??? I think it's algae, but not even 4 marine biologists have been able to ID it??? I collected it in the shallows of the Florida Keys.

I also collected this star while snorkeling in the Keys.

This was... my Flamingo Tongue snail that was also collected in the Keys along with some Gorgonian coral. Unfortunately the snail will only eat gorgonian coral and mine wasn't enough to keep it alive long term. BTW, the pretty colors are all on the mantle (flesh) of the snail. The shell is just a plain off white.

Too cool! The green ball is still intact?!
That's been in your aquarium for over a month?
Has it grown any or changed in any way?!
That deserves a separate thread.

I did a thread asking if anybody could give me an ID or even send me in the direction of somebody who might know. I talked to 2 professors (marine biologists) at 2 different universities. I asked the 2 that I know personally who work at the Bailey Matthews National Shell Museum. I even asked at Wet Web Media. No good answers. One wanted me to cut it open to see what it looked like inside! No way! And I only assume it's a algae. Many people think it's a sponge, but it has no incurrent pores and no excurrent holes for intake and discharge of water like every other sponge.

Yes, it's still alive. I had it in quarantine for a month, then in my sump for a few weeks and it's been in my DT since I did the new rockscape a week ago. It has gone through a couple of changes. When I got it home it had the 'spikes' sticking out. After 2 weeks tiny round balls developed at the ends of the spikes. A week later the tiny balls (still very small) developed spikes just like the big ball. Two weeks later the spikes on the big ball started to shrink and most of the small balls came off. I assume that is it's reproduction cycle, but I really don't know for sure. I did find a few of the small balls in the quarantine tank.

This photo is after the spikes became short and the small spike balls started to come off.

Lol, would love to try a few of the small balls!

How many did it spawn?

Sounds more animal than plant? Like simple worms dividing.

Norfolkgarden, all the little balls are off it now and I didn't save any. I may have some loose in the 50g cube DT and if I find one starting to grow, I'll let you know. To be honest, I was quite concerned about putting it in my DT at first. And since I still don't really know what it is, it could still be a problem going forward. All the little balls could start up and I might have a macro algae issue. Or it could die in the tank and cause some kind of chemistry problem, maybe even 'nuke' the tank! But I'm feeling better and better about it as time goes by.

Currently it's up close to the water surface at the very back of the tank and at the top of the new rockscape wall where it meets up with the center overflow. It's just a basic green ball, a bit smaller than a golf ball and the surface has a pattern of small 'bumps' over the entire surface and no spikes. The next time we go snorkeling in the Keys (probably before Thanksgiving) we will look around to see if we can find any more. If we do, I will certainly bring home a couple. I do want to cut one open to see what kind of structure is inside.

Have you contacted NASA?

We need to get an Id on that. I’ve got no clue what it is.

Ha! In the original thread I did say I'm less concerned about what it is, I'd just like to know what planet it's from and when it hatches, will it eat my face! ;Vamp ;Nailbiting

I really would like to know what it is.

To the OP, Jason, I'm sorry that your thread got hijacked here by me. For anybody who wants more on the weird green ball, here is the original thread and I'll be happy to keep it going.

Now lets turn this thread back to the Jason's original question about show inhabitants.

No worries your green ball of mystery is awesome, you should get someone to name it after you if it turns out to be previously undescribed.

Now what's everyone else got?

I'd try to get a picture of my emerald crab but he is in my cheato tumble and pinches...hard. I don't want to disturb him. He's pretty large though, about 2.5 inches across.
