I am in able to have a sump because I don't have the room and would like to know what is the best filtration. I have a refugium with chemical pure elite and aquamaxx hob skimmer. My next purchase will be a phosban 150. What else can I add to keep the water free of excess nutrients?

I will try that. How about a canister? I know they are problematic, but I was looking at the fluval g series and they seem easy to clean and replace media

You can run a canister filter no problem. They are great to use as a "Media Rector" with bagged medias. As long as you take out the sponges they will be fine. Also, they can be had really, really cheaply. I used to run a Fluval 205 before I got my sump and real media reactor to run GAC and GFO. Some people put polishing pads in them too (but they need to be cleaned/replaced every week).

If you leave the sponges in there - they will become nitrate factories and will cause more problems than they solve.

I used to run a hob fluvial filter and the sponge pad caught a lot of crud. Would you keep the biological ceramic media they come with?

Just do large water changes with correct temp and salinity. All other methods are just was to prolong the water change. Not that they don't work but I'm a firm believer in the water change method. Reef builders had a rant on it recently.

I just read that article, I want to combine the filtration that is supposed to prolong a water change while doing weekly 10% water changes to get the best water quality possible.

Run GFO in the Phosban, then get a DeNitrator, that'll take care of you.
