Noob question on GSP

Hi everyone,

So i added a GSP frag to my tank yesterday. No fish yet. Justed dosed since fritz 900 on the 1st day and let the tank run for a couple days .

The gsp opened up within hours after introduction. It's the next day, morning and it's closed. Lights haven't came on yet. Not worried but can I expect GSP to be closed every morning until lights are on ? Is this the case with most corals ?

If the tank isn't even cycled yet then coral will have issues. There's no nutrients in the water for them. Usually you want to wait a month at least after fish have been added. Even longer is better.

Corals close at night for protection and being unable to photosynthesize at night.
I agree with @Jekyl as far as coral in uncycled tanks go. One good thing you have going for you though is that gsp seems to survive the harshest conditions and will probably pull through.

I should mention I'm using Arag-Alive sand, CaribSea live [purple] rock. Along with the fritz 900 and daily dosing of Microbacter7.

I knew GSP to be Hardy so I took the chance . It's the only thing that I will put in the tank while the cycle completes. Read a few articles that mentioned cycle isn't necessary for corals but I understand the risks.

I will be continuing to dose bacteria and monitor parameters. Just wanted to know how GSP typically behaves other than being prolific lol

Everything you did speeds up the cycle, and it pretty much is, but it’s usually still safe to wait a bit just because swings can still occur. Hermit crabs are typically the only things rally safe to add this early. Fish in a few weeks, soft coral in about a month.

As long as completely isolated should be fine.

Awesome. Another question. I'm staring together pinkish algea on my dry rock. Could it be coralline already ? I did have the rocks in water in a tub for about a month before adding to tank

I second everyone else that it’s too early for corals since the tank is so new. Any chance you could take it out and ask the store where you got it to hold it for you

Ok everyone. So I did an ammonia test . Here's the results.

I believe it's reading <0.15
Opinions ?

You can always grow that on the glass, then, it’s easy to remove with a simple scraper and you can make a ton of frags if you want.
But it will look for both nitrate and phosphate in the column.

Yea I've seen this . Looks dope but a little unnatural to me personally. Who knows maybe later on I'd come around to the idea. Thank you tho !

Gotcha. Now that I have the GSP I can't shut the lights completely off other than a couple days . Think ima shut off the lights for a couple days then lower it to maybe 5-10%

It's only on rock so far but if it is cyano I wanna control it fast.

Cyano thrives off of high phosphate. Maybe that is what it is. FWIW there is cyano in my tank that hasn’t expanded or receded since I discovered it. It only takes over if there is an opportunity.
Gsp can be fine for a few days.
