My husband bought me a gift and can’t remember what it’s called. The lady at the fish store said he is community and reef safe, he was housed with a firefish goby.

He is about 2” long.

Yep. Matted Filefish. Might nip softies and LPS. Mine doesn't, a lot of people have problems with them. Mine has kept aptaisia out of my tank for going on 2 years now. Love these guys.

I’ve got one and love her/him. I got him to see if he would find my ball anemones tasty. I took all corals I could out of my DT and put in about her tank I have. I need to move some corals back into DT to see if he will nip at them. I haven’t seen him eat any ball anemones yet but really like how the filefish moves around the tank. Any suggestions on what coral would tempt him the most? Would like to move all my corals back but want to check if he’s a coral eater. Hasn’t touched the corals or Rock anemones that are still in DT. So I’m hoping she/he’s not a nipper.

I've heard they have a particular taste for acans.

Do you have Acans in your tank with your Matted Filfish?
I have 2. And to be honest, they're not growing very well. I attribute their poor health more to the shading from other corals and their proximity to a huge Hollywood stunner chalice and Duncan than the filefish.

Hollywood Stunner would be my guess

I’ve got a 350 gallon reef tank with all types of corals. The two file fish haven’t touched any of them. Yes they are fun to watch.

I was about to ask @Auquanut what other corals he had in the tank. Are they Matted Filefish @kzenoni ?
Lobo, acans, trachy, duncans, bubble, a couple different palys, rainbow star polyp, zoas, candy cane, couple of different chalices, and way too many SPS to name (don't think I could if I had to). I'm sure I'm leaving something out.

Come to think of it, if the filefish is taking the occasional snack I might not notice.

Oh. And yes. Matted filefish.

Cool, I heard they like Duncan’s also. I’ll slowly move stuff back. Now that he knows he gets fed other ways he might be less tempted to do so.

I'm a "heavy in, heavy out" kind of guy. Might be why I don't see as much of a problem. Punkin just gets fed well enough without having to graze.
