I am setting up my overflow for a bean animal drain. The question I have is do I glue/cement the uprights within the overflow box? I am concerned I will not get the correct height for the Durso portion and once it is cemented in place it will be VERY difficult to adjust it. Same with the emergency drain.

Thanks in advance for helping out a stupid reefer!

Can I imply from this that the emergency drain needs to be cemented?

None of the tubes inside the overflow box need to be cemented. Only pieces on the outside.
Please post a picture so we can get a better idea of the setup :)

+1

Based on your picture you may also want to shorten the height of your secondary drain.

...BTW, not a dumb question or dumb reefer at all. :)

If you can't deprecate yourself, who can you deprecate?

Thanks, you answered my next question before I even asked. I am going to take the whole system outside tomorrow to check for leaks, so I should be able to determine the necessary height of the second drain.

The water level should be half way up the top of the secondary "U" so water is flowing over and down but the pipe isn't full. I can't tell from the picture, but normally there is a valve on the primary so you can dial in the water level in the overflow (no valve on the secondary or emergency drains).

Yes, I have a gate valve on the primary. I will be doing a leak test later today and will determine the actual height for the secondary. Thanks for the tip regarding the height of the secondary though, that will get me a good starting point. Then maybe I will start a new tank thread. Plan is to transfer live rock and water (as much as I can) next weekend...if I can wait that long.

So, my plumbing has passed the leak test. Thanks to all for the info you provided.

Next question...

I plan on moving my live rock and livestock from a RS130D to a 40B with a 40B sump. Have made the decision to not move my sand, I will buy new sand. Question is, if I transfer as much of the old tank water to the new setup and then add to top it off, do I need to cycle the new tank?

I figure I can get close to ~25g out of the 130D.

Yes, there is. I successfully moved everyone into the 40B 2 weeks ago. Am currently going through some uglies, but nothing out of the ordinary.
