Not a true build thread, but a progress thread

I will for sure - I’m learning the hard way!
How on Earth do the oceans do it!?
Easy.... water volume. Parasites in the ocean get a little nibble, drop off, and the fish never sees them again. In a closed system, the parasites overwhelm the much smaller space and fewer fish hosts...

Welcome to reef2reef, Jacquie!

Disease/parasites are common unfortunately in the hobby. Unfortunately. Lot to do with the wholesalers and distributors. They really don't clean/sterilized are holding tanks and it spreads quickly.

As stated, a QT is a good idea. It can be a quick and easy set up to insure the healthy fish in your display stays healthy. If you haven't read this yet, here you go:

Reading your thread brings back memories of me starting out back in 1993! Any questions that others can't answer, just type #reefsquad and we'll come running!

Brilliant - thank you! Will someone respond to emergencies at midnight? :)

What time zone are you? European Reefsquad members maybe.

Eastern Time. Good to know there are Reef Squad member all over the world - I guess someone on the West Coast would have been able to help:).

Do you also agree that it’s Brook? I’ve had so many different opinions now - I want it to be the best case scenario one :)

Your welcome!

The forum is quite large. At peak times during the day, we will have as many as 8,000+ members online. And it's getting larger. We are the largest saltwater/reefing site in the world.

Brook is a highly contagious disease and is common with clowns, but other fish can get it too.

A great read

One thing as a hobbyist that came from freshwater, any fish can become sick, fresh or salt. Learning what to look for can take sometime, but over time with experience is key.

I learned the hard way when I first started out, loosing $300+ of fish to Ich.

Before buying anymore fish, buy a QT set up and meds to treat them. Not to sound arrogant or pushy, just looking out for you.

Research compatibility and only buy healthy fish. Ask the LFS to see them eat first.

Let's make sure the fish you have are healthy and clear of issues before going forward.

Once again, we've all been where your at before. Heck when I started out, there wasn't any internet! Lol :)

How did we survive before the internet? Thanks so much for your advice. When will I know if it’s Brooklynella for certain?

Pictures tonight - does it look like brook or is it not always obvious at first? I still don’t see white spots

I can’t see anything in the photos. How is she acting/breathing? No discernible marks at all? What about the other fish, is the gramma still hiding and not eating as well?

No marks - she was pink in her front white stripe last night, but that had gone.
Not acting herself. She’s breathing okay now (not last night), but not swimming much - and not swimming out to eat...but has taken the odd bite of food that floated by. Not much.
Gramma still hiding in rocks, but moving a little. Haven’t seen wrasse since morning, but she is normally sleeping when I get home from work. She did eat this morning and was acting normal.

Ok, rounded up a few photos to compare... first symptom is usually heavy breathing. Then you start to see areas of white haze, maybe some white spots, and eventually the sloughing of mucous off of the skin:

Is that what the male looked like?

In short, part of being in nature is that the strong survive, so species in the ocean that aren't as stressed are less likely to have disease and the healthy ones are reproducing. When we either breed fish sustainably, or pull them out of the ocean they are more susceptible. Sustainably bred fish might not have the same natural resistance and critters from the ocean go through a lot of stress between the ocean and our homes.

Fish are actually very resilient creatures, but in a closed system like an aquarium, if we are not careful, stress can weaken their immune system.

Also- as stated before, the water volume discrepancy and fewer hosts play a major factor. @ngoodermuth always has great advice and info, I always think highly of her opinion and I think you will do just fine if you follow her advice.

The eyes looks like that - they were not normal. The belly seemed lighter in colour, and the mucus/peeling skin was on the underside.

Aw geez, making me blush [emoji4]
