Water changes are limited as to "natural" dosing. If you are successful at keeping SPS, you will hit a breaking point where water changes no longer fulfill the missing elements due to growth and you will have to initiate some sort of dosing.

Even good coralline growth will outstrip the ability of water changes to supplement alkalinity unless you change on the order of 20-50% daily.

It would be interesting to see folks who do not dose alkalinity in any way post their measured alkalinity. It has probably dropped to the point where alkalinity is limiting hard coral and coralline algae growth.

On a 75 gal mixed reef with not a lot of large coral I dosed recommended I tribals of reef fusion 1/2. I went a while with out testing outside of nitrates and salinity but continues to dose. A few months 5-8 later I noticed that coralline in my tank was starting to fade. So I tested calcium. It read 340. It took me 3 weeks of max Dailey dosing to get my calcium back. Now corals were not negatively affected by this not short term atleast, however they were growing extremely slow. Now I have Valium around 480-500. Growth is noticeable (on some sps) Dailey.
