Hey guys, I'm a new reefer that started up his first tank just about a year ago now. I can't seem to get coralline algae to take off in my tank! It's a 75 gal display, 30 gal sump system. I run a reef octopus brand protein skimmer sized for 100 gallons, a 300w heater, filter socks, and koralia 3rd generation powerheads in my tank. For lighting I have a pair of AquaIllumination Prime HD LED fixtures that I usually run around 60% power. I have a pair of clownfish, a royal gramma basslet, a yellowail damselfish, and a cleaner goby. I have two zoa frags, a seriatopora, trumpet coral, green star polyps, two ricordeas, favia, chalice, and a few other frags I can't remember off the top of my head. I have a sandsifter starfish, many crabs and snails, and various other marine life like sponges etc.

As I am a new reefer with little experience, I have some questions that have been bugging me for months that I'd like to be able to discuss with other experienced hobbyists.

Even though my tank has been setup for more than a year at this point, I have never been able to detect any amount of Nitrates or Phosphates. My other chemicals are in check. Here are images of my water parameters over time (I use an app called Aquarimate to keep track of this):

All of these were tested with API brand test kits (with the exception of magnesium which was tested with Salifert) as well as a refractometer. I understand it's good to keep nutrients like Nitrates and Phosphates low in a reef tank, but surely 0ppm is too little. Marine life still needs these elements, and I've read that water conditions can be detrimental to coral health with 0ppm phosphate? I have seen some growth in my corals but not crazy growth. I feed them reef chilli on the regular.

The main advice I'm seeking is how to get coralline algae to grow in my tank. I know coralline takes a long time to take hold, but my tank has been running for a year and I've seen no spreading of coralline algae on to my rocks. I've introduced dozens of different strains on frag plugs, crab shells, live rocks, and I've even introduced live coralline spores from ARC reef's coralline algae in a bottle to no avail. The coralline algae that I introduce to my tank just fades and does not spread. This is especially frustrating because I see coralline algae start to spread in my quarantine tank after having it introduced for only two weeks! My quarantine has worse water parameters than my display and is much less stable yet the coralline is growing nicely.

I know this seems like a non problem but having brown/white rocks in my tank is seriously inhibiting my enjoyment of the hobby, as I crave the look of the bright purple colored rocks that I see when I introduce live rock into my system. Also, I believe that if coralline algae isn't growing that it is a sign of a much bigger underlying problem in my water chemistry that I'd like to address.

I appreciate any advice,
Nicholas

Do you have the color and time layout for the lights?

You can add more warm spectrums.
Probably like your qt has.

Also noticed your mag is quite low.. its recommended to be 1350 to 1400..

I keep mine around 1450

Low mag will deff hinder coral and coraline growth

I suggest you invest in better kits. API kits simply aren’t accurate enough to measure the levels you want to target. Corals and Coraline Algae need nutrients including Phosphate and Nitrate. Do some searching on the forum - there is a huge amount of information and differing opinions out there. Almost universally however 0/0 is not what you want.

I use Red Sea kits and target Phosphate ~0.02 ppm and Nitrate ~0.5 ppm. Others use Salifert kits and Hanna checkers. Some target higher, but be warned that the higher you target the more important it is your other algae are under control. A lot of this comes down to the nutrient export strategies you use. In my case that is small water changes monthly, a skimmer and Red Sea N04:PO3:-X.

During the peak times of the day I run my lights at 70-80% blue spectrums (violet, blue, deep blue, UV), 33% green and red and 40% whites. Should I increase the whites, greens, and reds?

What can I do to increase magnesium? Would you recommend dosing? One thing to mention, I have been using cheap instant ocean salt mix.

Hi, did you ever increase your magnesium? Reef Crystals has more magnesium than Instant Ocean "regular," so that would be a good upgrade for a tank with corals.

I’ve been increasing my magnesium slowly. Basically I’ve made some changes, I’ve switched to Red Sea coral pro salt mix and bought Red Sea and Salifert brand test kits. Can’t say that I’ve noticed a huge increase in calc, alk and mag since switching but certainly a slight increase. I’ve also started dosing a Kent brand coral supplement that seems to be having an effect. I still haven’t gotten coralline to take hold yet, so I recently bought one of those ICP water analysis test kits to get a good idea of lots of major and minor trace elements in my water, and I’ve also been tweaking lighting. Since using Red Sea brand kits I’ve noticed my nitrates at about 4-5ppm but still have unreadable phosphates. I’ve been having some cyano so I’m thinking that my phosphates are just getting eaten up by the cyano so I’ve been removing it and decreasing nutrient import

Have you introduced sources of living coralline? I couldn't figure it out until I introduced a frag plug covered in coralline and the week after I saw spots popping up everywhere. Mind you my alk is around 10, calc around 460, mag around 1600-1700 (I run high to keep gha away).

I’ve introduced many varieties of live coralline, live rock pieces, frags, shells, and even the coralline algae in a bottle stuff. You have high calc alk and mag so I’m thinking that my low levels of these things may be a growth inhibitor for me.

I changed mag/alk around the same time so that is a possibility.
