Not sure what all the acronyms mean

Coral acronyms... Ummm. What do they mean. I only know coral that and nothing else. I had a small 30 gal reef tank in Hawaii 17 years ago and shipped a stack of coral back to Texas for my future reef tank that never happened. Before the coral police start jumping on me like a flee on a dog, I picked these up off the beach near my house after a storm. I didn't harvest it out of the ocean. Should I keep it; use it in my future setup or sell it? Could really use the money since I just bought my first house.



Taking or damaging coral, live rocks and coral rubble
State law prohibits the breaking or damaging, with any implement, any stony coral from the waters of Hawaii, including any reef or mushroom coral. HAR 13-95-70

It is unlawful to take, break or damage, any implement, any rock or coral to which marine life of any type is visibly attached. HAR 13-95-71

The taking of sand, coral rubble or other marine deposits is permitted in certain circumstances. The material may not exceed one gallon per person per day, and may be taken only for personal, noncommercial purposes. HRS §171-58.5, §205A-44

I’m not a lawyer but would imagine selling it because you bought a house and could use the money might not qualify as a “ certain circumstance. “ Of course ii is one but is it legal??

I was saying that their are a lot of acronyms about coral. SPS etc. I have no idea the lingo. Had a 30 gal reef tank in my bedroom in Hawaii. I didn't use online forums, but asked a few questions from other reef tank owners on the island. It was a simple setup. No power heads etc. A small yellow tang back then on the island was $8

I bought a house and could use the money for closing later this month and I was thinking about selling this coral. Do you guys think I should hang on to it or sell it?

It was washed up on the shore after a big storm. I think the real problem is with people stripping it right out of the ocean, which I don't support. 17 years ago... It's here and done. Sell it? Save for future tank? Toss it in the trash?

All other questions aside, per the pics, what you have is rock. 17 years ago it may have been considered "live", but now I think most would agree it to be "dry". Resale of dry rock on a secondary market (at least what I see around me) is quite meager. Maybe $2⁰⁰/lb-ish ??? Guessing from the pics, you have 15lbs or give or take. With that said, guess you could try to sell it and get the wife a nice candle holder for the new house or something. Or if it was me, keep it to add to a new build since buying more rock (not on a secondary market) can get pricey. I would look to give it away to another reefer at the least instead of tossing it as you mentioned.

If you need money to close on a house, selling this rock will not help. I am sure there are many posts with acronyms. I am not sure if you are just trolling, but it does look like you broke some law 17 years ago since it looks like you took more than one gallon of rock in a day. I would put it in my back yard and grow cactus on it since you will definitely not have money to run a reef tank.

I'm selling unused items around the house. Every little bit helps when gathering money for a large purchase. I'll hang onto it for my future reef tank as it seams to be worth little to nothing. My next reef tank will be a 40+. Thank you for the advise.
