Not sure what this is? Already been through dinos

So about 6 months ago I found myself battling dinos, and after dosing a regimen of NO3 and PO4 for a 3-4 weeks I seemed to beat them. I slowly backed off my dosing, as I started to get some bubble algae in my display and had to clean that glass quite a bit, but have been dino free for quite some time. A few months went by and I backed off dosing any PO4 or NO3, although my tank is still pretty lightly stocked and noticed my nutrients were bottoming out again.

So over the last few weeks I've starting to get some weird growth all over my rocks. It's more like a whiteish brownish chunky jelly like growth. It isn't very difficult to remove, I can usually just suck it up with a turkey baster or blow it off my rocks. But it's getting to the point where it takes me an hour or 2 to clean it and within 10 days it's completely covering all my rocks again. I have no idea what it is. Nutrients have been pretty close to 0 again for awhile, but still dealing with some clumps of bubble algae popping up. Corals are completely unaffected by this stuff so I didn't think it was dinos again. Also it takes about 10 days to develop. Not sure if I should start dosing nutrients again, or if that might just make it worse. Any ideas on what it might be would be appreciated. Thanks.

look up chrysophytes problems in reef tanks too, there are threads here.

I think this is a first dual expression of them together in fact.

if your tank is under 50 gallons you have an easy fix

if its above fifty gallons, a large UV system would stop that after you took time to remove it again w a deep clean. if its under 50 gallons, uv w still help but isn't required. we have a way to clean smaller reefs by taking them apart that no invader can beat.

the method you used to attack the dinos was a suppressive move, its not the same thing as raw mean export of all them out of your system in a true deep clean, and then taking measures against the fully exported tank. that's a totally opposite system that small nano tanks use to be perpetually invasion free, always. its easy to upscale right up till about fifty gallons then its a ton of work and only 1% want their setups clean bad enough to still run it. what correctly sized UV filtration could do for you in both cases is just immense, its powerful for non anchored invaders. If im not mistaken, the only way a reef tank chrysophytes invasion was won was through direct action. theres no adjusting it with redfield ratios and pods I bet.

I think you might be right, it does look like it could be a combo of both to me. I guess I have some researching to do on chrysophytes too. :mad:

The display is 70 gallons. I considered UV on my first go around with dinos, but they disappeared right before out I was about to pull the trigger on one. Maybe it's time now.
