Not sure what yellow tang has?

I just noticed today that my yellow tang seems to have some sort growth on its fins and I am not quite sure what it is.

It doesn't pick up well on the camera so I did the best I could.

The tang has these white growth looking things on his pectoral fins, pelvic fins, dorsal fin and there is also a bunch of little bumps near the rear of his body that don't have much colour but they sort of look white. He still has an incredible appetite and is not shy at all but this is the first day I've noticed anything. I've considered Ich but the only symptoms I've really noticed is that he rubs up against the glass as if he were trying to itch something. It also sort of looks like lymphocystis based on what I've seen online. I'm going to give it some time and see if anything starts to go away hopefully a shrimp can get it off but I haven't seen any shrimp get too close to him. I would really appreciate any advice I could get. I have never had to deal with a fish that is sick like this.

Looks to be Lymphocystis, a viral disease that is common with tangs, angel, triggers etc. It's not typically fatal just maintain good water quality and a well balanced diet. Adding some vitamins to his food such as selcon or vitachem should help him fight it off.

Ok, thanks for the advice I will keep an eye on him to see if it gets any worse. Would you recommend using something like Pimafix or melafix if it starts to get out of hand?

X4 that looks like lymph. The spot on the dorsal nearly certain. The others, fairly, certain.

Only in more advanced Lymph outbreaks will you start to see behavior changes like breathing and swimming patterns. The rubbing on the glass. This early, still makes me lean more towards Ich.

What's in the pictures is lympho, but that's not to say that he doesn't also have ich or flukes ect. that would cause him to scratch like that. He could also just be trying to fight his reflection.... mine did this when my tank was new and the glass was very clean.

I am also pretty certain that what is in the picture is just lympho. But I'm definitely still going to consider ich as being a possibility because there are little white bumps on his body as well that the camera will not be able to pick up since they are so lightly coloured that they are almost yellow. I guess for now I'm just gonna have to wait and see how this plays out for the little guy since this is all visible info I can provide at the moment.

Hold up. almost yellow? Tiny? Like a dusting over the body? Any heavy/fast breathing, swimming into the flow of a powerhead or return or hiding a lot in addition to the other things listed?

I'm not really sure how to explain it that well but I guess if I had to compare it to something it would be almost like a white head on someone's skin but they are so small and super hard to see since the white blends right in with the yellow in fact some of the bumps are still completely yellow. As far as behavioural changes I haven't noticed any thing either than the rubbing up the glass but if anything the tang seems to be a lot less shy than before. It eats anything I put in the tank as well.

I just can't see any of that in the pictures. The pictures make him look pretty great. I think a wait and see approach is warranted in this case. Work on getting the lympho taken care of and if you get a picture of the tiny bumps you are talking about be sure to post them up. and watch for the symptoms I described.

With yellow tangs ich tends to camouflage pretty well as you describe - yes if you can get better pics that would be very helpful

I had the same thing on my yellow tang. I asked a guy in the business 40 yrs what to do? Before meds, try pulling it off with your nail. I did, and it never came back. It's easy to do. Now catching him/her is another story, but it's easier at night when lights have been off for awhile. Use room light to search and catch, they tend to be a little sleepy at night. If you don't have a Cleaner Shrimp, get one.

I do have two cleaner shrimp and I hope maybe they will do something but if they don't I would be willing to scrape it off if I absolutely have to. I'd rather that be a last resort though I have never actually had to handle any fish either than when I had to trim the puffers teeth.

My dad used to plop fish with Lympho down on a cutting board, use a razor blade to cut the nodules off and then apply mercurochrome for good measure.

His son figured out you can just wait it out and usually the nodules go away on their own.
