What are yours guys thoughts only having love rock to perform filtration on a frag tank? I’m talking 40 lbs of live rock ( only in sump) for a 40g frag tank.

Curious to see what people think.
THANKS!

It is fine for basic filtration. I am talking about nitrogen cycle only. I am also talking about a decent amount of it and not just a few rocks in the sump, but a "normal" amount for a 40 breeder as if you stacked it in the tank for a rockscape.

Of course, talking about real live rock and some dead/dry stuff seeded with bacteria in a bottle. Dead/dry rock can take years to get good at doing this whereas rock from the ocean can do it once it gets cured.

This is only part of the equation and you still need to figure out oxygenation, metal/organic removal and some other things. Protein skimmer can help with a lot of these.

I am currently running 2x 64 gallon reservoirs with a skimmer and 300 lbs of live rock with tons of filter feeders etc. courtesy gulf live rock.
With a fist full of Chaeto and pods just running free.
In a total combined 160-180 gallon system. Feeding my frag tables up top.
Seems to be working just fine for me.

I run that on my frag tank. 40 gallon breeder, live rock rubble on the bottom 1/3 then a huge frag stand and two fish. The only thing I have is a few circ pumps and a hob filter with floss for solids that gets dumped every 3-4 days.
