now what.... ich AFTER fallow

Goodluck! Stories like this make me feel great about having a nano with just 5 fish and no tangs.

FWIW, I didn't start having success until I stopped using copper and CP.
Just curious where do you source your fish?

Do you run a UV, diatom, or oxydator?

I'm obviously pro prophylactic QT. I have lost very few fish in QT since adapting my methods and also using the Hanna checker with copper power. It's much easier to treat and monitor.

I'm not saying my way is the only way. We all have to do whatever works best for our own situation.

The other thing is depending on what fish you desire to keep may determine if ich management is a technique that is attainable or not.

Both online and LFS. I run UV in one of my two tanks.

I normally treat my fish, just not with copper. My usual regimen: 200ppm formalin bath for 1 hour, followed by a 5 minute bath in freshwater with 100ppm hydrogen peroxide, then into the DT. Unless it's a butterfly. In that case, it also gets 3 days with an antibiotic.

Have I been lucky up till now? Maybe. I haven't been in the hobby long enough to know.

I feel your pain. I've lost two cardinals, a powder blue, watchman goby, four clowns, three dominos, and a Midas blenny to either ich or velvet. So far my fox face, coral beauty, two blennys, a RedHawk, and a six line are doing well. I opted to not destroy my tank setup and treat the DT by using Rally's and kick ich for treatment. The rally's didn't seem very effective but the kick ich is working. Fox face had it and was borderline gone but is/has made a recovery. He's eating again. Not sure how it got into the tank but I've learned a valuable lesson. Nothing goes into the DT without being in QT copper treatment for two weeks.

i read your first post.
so you had your fish in tote for 68 days. did you treat the fish for parasite while they were in qt?
i didnt read anything about treatment.
68 days fallow is long enough but my 2 cents is that the fish were never really cured in qt and when brought back over to main tank got infected again.
come on.. give me a little credit :)

40 days in copper, tested every 3-4 days with hannah meter. lowest was .48 and highest was .70. using cupramine. i didnt hit them with prazi or anything as i have never seen any signs of worms, etc.

i took them out early as i had a boo boo with using cheap carbon to absorb the copper, i created a ton of carbon dust, which led to MHLLE and i was just tired of all those fish in a large tote.

FWW, i always treat new fish. every fish gest copper and prazi. i think its kind of ridiculous to simple "observe" a fish in QT. how do you observe their gills??

If you don’t want to pull the fish out you could always give Polylabs medic a go. Some people will tell you they’ve had success, others will tell you it’s a waste of time but it’s your reef and you can ultimately do what you’d like. I had a similar issue where I had an ich outbreak, moved all my fish to QT, had to take apart the whole tank and take out all live rock to get them, 8 of my 12 fish died in QT. I went fallow for 80+ days, put the fish back into the DT and noticed some spots a week afterward on my blue hippo, I treated my DT with medic for 20 days and haven’t seen any spots since. That’s my story, I feel your pain and wish you the best!
how long ago was that?

You should test your dt with a single black Mollie. If ich is still present in the display it will show quickly on the mollie and you know to wait longer. Then you won't have to treat your display fish again

My DT was Fallow for 76 days on 5/29/18. I moved the 4 remaining fish from QT to DT on 6/9/18. I added new fish (after QT'ing) on 7/31/18. Saw a few spots on my Blue Hippo (and only my blue hippo) but started treated my DT with Medic. I treated for 20 days, the middle of August and my tank has been great since. I've also added 5 more fish (after qt'ing) and now have 13 inhabitants in my tank and feel pretty good about where I'm at. But now that I said that I'm sure I'll see some spots tomorrow.

You can try dr G's medicated food. Not the eggs but the actual frozen one. Probably wont work but there is a chance if all your fish eat it.

well, i thought i would provide an update even though i feel it is somewhat embarrasing in some way.

i went to home depot and bought lumber and a pond liner and quickly built a 220 gallon treatment tank.

i got it all filled and then decided i was going to catch all the little fish first, then the big guys.

what ensued was a 7 day long battle to catch my anthias. traps, starved for 3 days then traps, arcylic tank divider, multiple nets.. i even bought a huge koi net.

i caught two of the 9. It was the holidays, i was exhausted with work and i just said the hell with it. I broke three seperate sps colonies trying to catch these fish. i was NOT going to take my tank apart again. Think im lazy?? YOU take apart a 300 gallon tank with a couple thousand dollars worth of sps in it.

So anyways, i made some home brewed food and hoped for the best. Cod, salmon, shrimp, halibut, clams, clam juice, vitamin C, nori, beta glucan, and cod liver oil.

So for the past month or so they have been doing fine, not a single loss. the only one with skin spots is the achilies and he only has maybe 2-3.

I really dont suggest this as a method, i only wanted to share my experience so that if someone is in a similar situation and crunched for time they may be able to hold out for a little bit.

PLEASE dont tank this is an excuse to say "he didnt go fallow why should I"? I have essentially perfect water quality and a fish community that peacefully coexists. My achilies tang is apprantly from south boston or philly, they dude is just tough and mean. I have heard many many many more stories of achilies dieing from ich than not.

so anyways, thought i would follow up, soo many threads just die without follow up. I will likely go fallow this spring.

thanks again to all the had suggestions
