Hello Fellow Reefers,
Its been some time since i have posted (mods if this is in the wrong place plz let me know) and everything is doing great. Water Params are fine and im running (2) 150 watt 14K Phoenix bulbs. For some time now i have been getting this pain in the butt Algae that is growing out of my live rock. Tank has been running for about 8+ years (yes i have changed the substrate in that time span). Anyways, this algae. It looks like Cheato growing right out of my LR. Its a pain to remove and i have been doing it by hand for awhile but now its just getting annoying. I mean this stuff is tough. So tough that when i pull chunks of it off the LR it takes some of the LR with it. It just keeps growing. Ive been in the hobby since i was about 15yrs old; now im 31 and ive never seen anything like it. I should also say that i used to have tons of Cheato in the fuge section of my sump but it has almost disappeared, everytime i changed my water i would have to cut more than half of it away since it grew so fast. I have one of those clip lights over my fuge with a CFL Spotlight but im guessing its because the bulb is a few years old now. I took a piece of my LR to my LFS and the owner (who i trust) said it was Byropsis and that i need to just chuck out all the LR that its growing on before it gets bad. The only thing is that it doesnt have the fern like growths coming from the stalks. Im sure that when i used to cut back my Cheato in the fuge some would escape into the main display but i didnt think it would anchor itself to my LR the way it has.. Ive included some pics of some of it that i pulled out about 2 days ago (has been in the trash until i finally decided to see if you guys had any idea what it could be and pulled it out, i know, eww, but as reefers we have touched nastier, smellier stuff ie. skim-mate.. lol.. Please help me identify and get rid of this crap and let me know if you need some pics of it actually on the LR. Thanks
You can actually see the small piece of LR still on the base from pulling it out. Thats how tough this crap is
