@Yuri Z
Welcome to r2r. To better answer your question requires more details from you. When you say sump, yet you have photosynthetic macro, I assume that means you have a light in your refugium. What results do you want to achieve with your refugium?

PS. LOOKS LIKE CAULERPA

Thanks so much. Correct, I have a compartment after the sock and skimmer that I’ve filled with chaeto. However, light spills into the following chamber and it has started in it.
Caulerpa I’m going to pick as much out as possible and hope it doesn’t frag into the display

thanks again for your help

The aim of the fuge is to soak up any extra nutrients and build habitat for pods etc.

Details matter. There are many kinds of nutrients. One of the byproducts (exudates) of algae growth is DOC (dissolved organic carbon). DOC exudates from coral are mostly lipids & proteins while DOC exudates from algae are mostly carbohydrates/glucose. How large is your display? In my experiences, algae refugiums are not very efficient at removing nutrients considering what they leak into the water. While I use utilitarian & ornamental macro algae in all of my display tanks, all of my refugiums are focused on cryptic sponges and micro inverts.

After 51 years of Reefing, my focus is on nutrient recycling by growing food in the tank to feed hungry mouths. The dual 55G tanks are my interpretation of a Caribbean mixed garden lagoon with yellow ball sponges, red tree sponges, orange elephant ears, gorgonions including two deep water NPS gorgonions & some flame scallops.

Wow!!! Such a beautiful set up, thanks fsharing.
Brilliant info thank you, I’ve kept it pretty simple it’s chaeto with 2 small mangroves that have rooted into it. Whenever I remove chaeto I do disturb a fair amount of solids at the bottom. It’s a 600L system.

I might rethink the fuge and do some more research. I’ve only been reefing for about a year now so I’m still bewildered by the amount of options :) long term goal is a balanced System sps dominant

I think a cryptic refugium would compliment your SPS requirements. I never wanted to invest in alkalinity demanding hard corals. I run high nutrient systems that are skimmerless with little

Understand this about nutriment management. Your corals are your biofilter. I am all about nutrient recycling until time to frag & sell corals. Then it’s nutrient export.
