Why is it that we can nuke our corals with light when some coral reefs are exposed to full sun in water as deep as our tanks and dont get nuked?
1A big part is what they are acclimated to. Mostly they bleach because of a change in lighting. A jump up.
That said also the sun does not sit at high noon all day. Water surface can also reflect allot of light especially when the sun hits it at angles. Through out part of the day a coral can self shade. Basically in the morning one side of the coral is lit and the other side in the evening.
Light levels also decrease pretty fast in the ocean as you go deeper. so you have to look at what depth a coral comes from.
Some SPS sit in direct sun out of the water at low tide and they can handle allot of par. If they are removed from that light for a while and put in lower light levels they will adjust. Throw them back on that reef in direct sun they would probably bleach without acclimation.
