I have a fish only dt that has velvet in it. I would like to just nuke the tank. What would be the best way to do this and still be able to use the sand and rock after? I under stand I will have to re cycle the tank.

Thanks ahead of time.

I already did one for 7 weeks and some how when I re introduced the fully qt and healthy fish they all got velvet again. Plus since there is no coral or anything I think this will be the faster way to get the tank back up and running. I have fully cycled media I can pull from my reef tank to help get it back up and running.

The only thing I know to do is dose bleach. 1 Tablsespoon per gallon. Run for 24 hours.

Then drain and dry everything. Completely dry.

Does your reef have fish in it?

Just be careful adding media from another tank. Unless you are 100% it is disease free. You could reintroduce a pathogen.

No my reef tank is 100 percent clean. I have always had a 100 percent qt everything untill I trusted a retailer that said a banna eel I was buying had been qted for over 3 months and was fully healthy. Well it was carrying velvet.

Would I be able to just put prime in the tank to neutralize the bleach?

Prime will neutralize bleach. Let me go back through some old PM's and see if I can find what Humblefish uses. It is a chemical dechlorinator you can get at a pool store.

What about tuning it to freshwater for a short time. Will that not kill all the parasites? Might be a safer alternative to bleach.
That's a very interesting thought. I don't know if it will kill everything thiugt. Does abyany know if it will for sure?
