Hey Everyone,

Wanted to start out by saying thanks to the people that helped me out earlier this week. I am 3 months into my first tank, and caught an outbreak of velvet in my 55 gallon tank.

I setup a QT tank for my fish (1 blenny, 2 clownfish, 1 tang), and treated them with ICH-X because it was what I could get at the time. I am going to do a majority water change to treat them with cupramine since my LFS finally opened and I could get some. Sadly I lost my blenny in this whole process, and my tang is not quite back to normal.

Now my actual question is what is the best way to nuke my tank? I feel like starting fresh would be better overall for myself and my fish rather than waiting out the 76 day fallow period for velvet. Especially since I have no inverts or coral in my tank yet. I was also suggested to just use cupramine on the DT and then do heavy water changes for 30 days after that to try and remove the copper, but I'm not confident enough in that approach.

I would really like to keep my rock, but will replace the sand. Do I just add bleach to the system and let it run? Do I drain it and scrub with bleach? Also what is the best way to handle the rock? Bleach and then set in the sun and thoroughly wash to try and get rid of any trace of the bleach before restarting?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Velvet is actually only a 42 day fallow period. Ich is 76 days.

If you want to hard reset anyways.
Don't use copper, it will get absorbed into the rocks to be leached at some random point later on.

Drain the tank, remove everything. Scrub everything down with a vinegar solution and let dry for a few days.

Rock, I'm not 100% sure on, but I believe lots of people soak rocks in bleach/peroxide/other solutions and let dry in the sun to kill algae problems, and are able to reuse them after thorough rinsing.

Personally, I would recommend Judy waiting out the fallow. I know it sucks, but it preserves your biofilter, and let's your rocks age and whatnot. Your fish are going to be in QT for at least 14 days anyways.
