I also have an IM Nuvo 40 that's been up just over 10 months and I have two ocellaris clowns, a yellow watchman goby paired with a pistol shrimp, a firefish and I recently added a bicolor blenny. You can find more detailed info in my build thread, but for filtration I'm running the following:
- ~32 lbs of live rock that I got from my LFS
- ~20 lbs of CaribSea aragalive live sand
- 1st chamber: inTank filter caddy with inTank filter floss
- 2nd chamber: inTank refugium basket with chaeto and the IM chaetomax fuge light (running 12 hours at night)
- 3rd/Center chamber: Eheim Jager 150W heater, Tunze Osmolator 3155 ATO, Sicce Syncra 1.5 return pump (replaced the stock pump)
- 4th chamber: IM Ghost Skimmer
- 5th chamber: inTank media basket with filter floss, Chemipure Blue, Purigen and Marine Pure Bioballs
- (2) Jebao OW-10 Wavemakers running at 40% on Else (random) mode
- Inkbird Temperature controller w/ a cheap Wal-mart clip-on fan for cooling
I started it without the refugium and was doing 5 gallon water changes once a week, but I started slacking on the water changes and my nitrates jumped up to 25-30ppm. Once I added the refugium my nitrates came down and hover around 3-7ppm now.
I was having some issues with the chaeto getting slimy and becoming a detritus trap at first but that was likely because I was keeping marine pure bioballs in the bottom of the fuge basket which was blocking the flow through the chamber. Once I got rid of those it started to do better. I also dosed a little bit of iron (Ferrion by Brightwell Aquatics) to help with chaeto growth. A word of warning though is overdosing iron can be really bad so I used like half the recommended dose or less and only did it a few times just to jumpstart the chaeto growth. I don't really dose it anymore.
Regarding maintenance, I change out the filter floss every 3-4 days, empty the skimmer cup every 3-4 days, and I try to turkey baste the rock and sand every 3-4 days as well. If you have good flow, the rock and sand bed cleaning may be unnecessary but I don't want detritus to build up and cause a nutrient spike down the road.
I'm down to 5 gallon water changes every 2 weeks or so since my nutrients stay pretty stable and I'm dosing 2-part by hand. As coralline algae started to grow and my stony coral stocking level went up, my alkalinity was starting to get used up faster than water changes were replenishing it so I started dosing. It's pretty low effort and I can miss a day here and there without issue but the corals are definitely happier since I started dosing.
Other than that it's pretty much just cleaning the glass when it's needed and feeding the fish. It's a great tank and I'm excited to see where it goes once I reach the one year mark and it hopefully hits its stride.
If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Best of luck on your new tank! I think you're gonna love it!
