Hey guys,

I have this skimmer for 1.5 years. The first year it worked fine. Recently, when I need to turn off the skimmer to clean the cup it has a hard time to start up. I have to blow air in the air tube to get it to start. Is anyone else running into this problem? I clean it but it didn't solve the problem. Has anyone else gave it a good vinegar bath and solved this problem?

Mine just started doing the same, it struggles to start up, initially just raising the water level, no bubbles and then when it does start up, I’m sure there aren’t enough bubbles. It’s about 3 years old.

It’s also developed a vibration noise from the air inlet and is no longer the silent beast it once was, and it’s been like this for about 12 months.

I’ve cleaned it completely twice in the last month and it’s made no difference and NYOS support ‘thinks’ it might need a new impeller, but it looks fine to me. So I’m thinking maybe motor.

At the moment to get any skim, the water level is around 2 inches below the top of the cup, and even that’s very dry skim so something is not right.

If you haven’t tried a vinegar bath it might be worth it definitely

Ive just ordered a new impeller and pump so Ill see what that does.

Will do. I’ll give mine a vinegar bath. Please let me know how the new parts work out for you. Overall, I love this skimmer if only they figure out this problem.

Will do, there coming sometime next week so I’ll update once I’ve installed them.

I was going to just order a complete new skimmer to be honest, but the LFS said the NYOS is designed the way it is for ease of replacement parts, and I’d be crazy just buying a new one.

There’s only really 2 things that can go wrong with it, and there now being replaced.

Yeah. I think the problem is that it doesn’t getting enough air. Blowing air with my mouth directly into the air tube gets it to start but it’s annoying to detach the air tube and hook it back up.

What’s even worse is the taste! Lol

i did it a few days ago after reading it, and it put me right off my lunch! Lol

Make sure you clean the clear tube that enters the nozzle. Calcium and other deposits build up and limits the air flow. It's hard to see, but once you look at it with a flashlight, it's pretty clear. I generally use citric acid for anything that's not acrylic, vinegar is too strong for pumps/rubber, etc... Love my 160!

This is a known issue with the 160s, EcoTech replaced my pump 3 times in the last 18-24mths for the same reason.
