Hi,

I got a new nyos 160 skimmer, it's been running now for about 2 months, still overflowing, whatever I do it just keeps overflowing, tried rising it up, lowering down, closing the valves nothing seems to work.

Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

It takes a while to tune in but it'll eventually fix itself. I have my airflow on the highest. Mine took a while to tune but works perfectly now and even fixes itself very quickly - and my water levels fluctuate a lot in my sump.

All - I am having troubles tuning this skimmer and I would like to share my notes:

I have the Quantum 160 which I bought used. I messed with adjustments and it got out of control which kicked off this adventure.

Nyos says start with the control tube open, air open and fine tune set to open at start and then slowly tune from there.

also - it says put at 8 inch water depth. I’m not sure if this is from the deck where the pump sits or from bottom where the rubber feet touch. I have assumed 8 inches total and that means water should go up to the white line in the Q or so.

first - I think more could be done to explain the controls in the docs.

my research:
Air control: small screw that moves very easily ( saw post about using plumbers tape to fix that)
Air all the way open will produce a lot of bubbles, raise the foam up and eliminate the micro bubbles out the rear port problem. In my opinion this is ideal but it is hard to make this setting work.

Rough Adjustment:
this is the lower tube under the fine adjustment. There is a hole. If you turn it you can have the hole facing the pump. I suppose this is open. If you twist it, clockwise from starting position, some of the bubbles start to come out. This has the effect of raising the water.

fine Adjustment - this is the large tube at top that says open and close. Turning towards close will raise the top level of the bubbles up. at open, it will be the lowest possible.

Continued - I decided that maybe the pump was clogged. I took everything apart and soaked in citric acid a bit. I then used pipe cleaners and stuff to clean openings.

As I was getting ready to screw pump back into place, it slipped and fell out of my hands about 2 inches to the floor. This broke the tip of the rotor as they call it - a tiny little nub after the needle wheel with a bit of rubber mean to hold things in place. I tried to run it anyway and this create a bad rattle. I submitted a ticket to Nyos using in-web form on their site and it was routed to Eco Tech USA who helped me buy a replacement rotor for under $40 including shipping. Pretty great service.

i was worried that this would come from Germany and I’d have to deal with a lot to get it. Not the case - came from Pennsylvania. Also - $40 delivered is pretty good Compared to the cost of a replacement Sicce needle wheel. For a while I really wished that this used a Sicce pump so that I could get parts easily but They made it easy. Also - it is nice to talk to a person on the phone- rare these days.

I also noticed that maybe I had not screwed in everything tightly - in particular that top plate that is above the pump. you tighten from above and I think that might take care of rattles too.

Now I am starting everything again with air open, control hole towards pump and fine tune open. I sat it on a Tupperware container and water depth is about 8.5 inches depending upon how you measure that.

A fair amount of foam is coming out the top- not micro bubbles. I think it will fill the cup every few hours. Foam is not pure white which means it is starting to do its job. My hope is that after 2 days it will be at a 2 full cups per week or less and that cup will be dark green again. I’ll update my post again.

Good luck to others having issues with this skimmer! I think it can be solved If you stick with it and follow the Nyos guidance.

I have a used 120 that I run in 8 inchs of water and have the air wide open (small screw on small tube) and then I start with the large water level (big tube with adjusting knob on top) set to wide open (turn clockwise til it stops. This raises the plug inside the tube at the bottom thus opening the hole in the tube wide open). Remove cup. This setting will give least bubble overflow at cup. Now start turning large knob counterclockwise 2 full turns at a time and wait 5 minutes. If bubbles are not overflowing turn 2 more turns and wait. Keep doing this til you get overflow. Now start turning her big knob clockwise 1/2 turn at a time waiting 5 minuets between turns. When bubbles stop over flowing and stay level with top of cup base replace cup and make minor adjustments. Remember counterclockwise turns closes the valve and raises water level and makes it wetter clockwise opens the valve lowering water level and makes it drier. If the unit Continues to over flow with big valve wide open Then leave big valve wide open and start closing air valve (small valve) by turning it clockwise. I like to run mine with air wide open. Occasional adjustment may be required.

Quick update - it settled down quickly and never even filled up the cup. I can now use the fine adjustment to move the bubbles up and down. Should work from here on (I hope).

I tried running mine at 8" of water depth for my 160 but could never get good bubbles. I have been fighting mine for couple months. The water level fine tune would have to be all the way closed and the air adjustment barely cracked open. Looked on youtube and 1 guy had success much lower water level(5") so I tried that.....still no help. Finally today I put the skimmer in around 10" of water and I am finally seeing great bubbles. I need to measure it for sure about water depth but its for sure more than the 8 that was recommended. Looking forward to it finally working. crossing my fingers

Little late on this one lol, scraped the noyos went back to my red sea skimmer the day it went back started skimming no issues, no water level adjustments etc.

I’ve had the same issue. Just can’t adjust it to the point of getting to the correct water level inside the skimmer to skim properly. Finally, figured I would rise the water level in the sump. It is now working perfectly. Water level in the sump lines up between the U and the A in the Quantum lettering.

Hi All,

Thanks for putting your advice on this thread.

I’m having some issues tuning it. I’ve had her over a month now during my cycle and can’t seam to get a head to bubble up no matter what I did.

I’ve added a cleanup crew and some fish a week ago and still can’t get a skim…

Ive gone ahead and tried the approach to open everything up (air open) (minor adjustment full open) (major adjustment full open)… this is the result after a day and advice would be amazing! I’m really struggling here

Im actually opposite direction with water level now. I would play with it and see when it gets better for your tank. Mine probley sits in only an inch or 2 above the inlet. i have it on top of tupperware
