Hello,

After testing for Nitrate using the NYOS test, I accidently poured the test solution into my sump (hint of yellow so roughly <12ppm nitrate). This was right after a water change so I did not have any water for an emergency water change. My system is a total of 35ish gallons (29 DT and 10 gallon sump). I am hoping that it just gets diluted enough to cause no issues and I just need to pay attention better. I did immediately change to fresh carbon in hopes it absorbs anything.

Anyone have any ideas if the reagents (5 drops liquid plus the 1 scoop of powder) are going to become a problem? I have small frags ( 2 LPS and 1 sps plus zoas, GSP and pulsing xenia) plus 2 clowns, yellow watchmen goby, and royal gramma and some snails and blue leg hermits. I should be able to do a water change tonight but the next scheduled is 10 gallons on friday (maybe less depending how high my nitrates creep).

Thank you.

I did have a 5 micron filter sock running for 36 hours after the mistake. I know have a 200 micron sock running (I switch filer socks every 2-3 days. Typically I use a 200 micron sock and then during water changes I use a 5 micron.

I use activated carbon and did switch it out to fresh carbon right after the mistake.

Just now, I checked for a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on the NYOS Nitrate Reefer kit. I could not find one online. Sellers of products sold in the USA are supposed to have them. The website has a link to the manual :

https://www.nyos.info/assets/downloads/Nitrate_Reefer_Manual_DE_EN_FR_IT_ES_NL.pdf

It states under Hazard :

"May cause an allergic skin reaction. Avoid breathing dust. Contaminated work clothing should not be allowed out of the workplace. Wear protective gloves/eye protection. IF ON SKIN: Wash with soap and water. If skin irritation or a rash occurs: Get medical advice/attention. Wash contami-nated clothing before reuse. For further information ask for a safety data sheet."

I'd contact NYOS for the "safety data sheet."

That said you have done much of what others suggested and what I'd consider:

1. Add fresh carbon
2. Water Changes
3. Extra Mechanical Filtration (5 micron filter sock) on cycle on cleaning/switch every 2-3 days

Timfish's suggestion of polyfilter is a good one. I often place poly before my reactor cartridge with carbon. Extra filtration could not hurt.

I'd consider one more option.

4. Increase oxygenation - air stone, increased wave maker setting, .....

From what was listed in the NYOS manual, the reagent is a skin irritant. I'd assume that makes it a gill irritant. Thus, it may affect respiration through the gills of your fish. If the corals and other inhabitants can not take more flow, consider placing the fish in a hospital tank for a bit. The hospital tank would also allow low light for stressed fish; a state the corals would not do well in.

All that said, you appear to be a few days in without any major bad news.

Best wishes,
Jim

Thanks for the reply, I can put the 5 micron filter back on today when I get home from work. Its been 2 days and I have not noticed any odd breathing from the fish and everything still seems to be eating just fine.

Just looked to what a polyfilter is, had no idea about this item. I will have to stop by my LFS to get a sheet of it. It sounds like it has a potential to help in my situation.
