Not considering money, is the nyos quantum 120 overkill on a 15g tank?

Is there any negatives to having such big skimmer on a small tank?

That skimmer has an odd rating for tank size... 26-132 gallons. That's quite a gap! And I'm guessing your tank would have to be heavily stocked at the low range.

If you put too big of a skimmer on a small tank, there won't be enough stuff to pull from the water to make it up the skimmers neck. You'll either be pulling out mostly water, or nothing at all.

Do you have a sump for your 15 gallon? Something like a 10 gallon?

Normally I would never say a skimmer is too large, but yes, that is overkill. Actually a skimmer isn't even needed on a tank that small........it is extremely easy to maintain water quality with water changes alone.

If you’re dead set on getting a skimmer for a tank with that small a water volume, get something more appropriately sized like an Ice Cap K2-50 as it is 3” in diameter as opposed to the 5” diameter NYOS Quantum 120. The smaller more appropriately sized skimmer will give you consistent performance for the smaller volume of water.

My entire water volume is 22-25g

Ya know what? Your tank would be perfect for that Auto Aqua auto water changer. It uses short wires so it would be a good setup to have a 5 gallon saltwater mix and an empty 5 gallon and let it slowly change 2% of the water automatically everyday. It works better for smaller tanks where you can have a small waste bin nearby. But for a 15 gallon, it would be perfect. It's also got a built-in ato also!

Here's the LINK if you want to check it out. Has great reviews. This would be better than a skimmer, imo, just replacing a small amount of water each day.

I'm not a huge fan of water changes as nutrient control and I'm set on getting a quality skimmer.
My main two reasons for wanting the nyos 120 is because of the quality and because it's silent. I have the hydor slim skim nano and it's loud!

Well are you looking for advice or are you looking for people to say it will work?

Because it will "work" but unless you have an enormous bioload it will not perform all that well and be inconsistent. I second the K2-50 recommendation.

That's a strange attitude... but no I'm not looking for advice, I'm looking for different opinions so I can make up my own. ..
I appreciate your thoughts on the matter, but as I was saying - noise is an issue and the K2-50 is not known to be silent - from what I'v heard.

If you really want as quiet as possible you should probably look into something with a DC pump.

Hard to tell if it’s an overkill without knowing what you have in your tank. however, it’s quite likely that it will be a pain to get consistent results so it may be pulling a lot of water and perhaps affecting your salinity. The only other downside would be the stripping of desirable nutrients etc from your system at a too fast rate.

Also you should make sure the water level in your sump can be maintained at or near manufacturer’s recommendation generally around 6-9” - sometimes a challenge in a small sump.

If you're looking for a completely silent skimmer the Nyos isn't the best option either. I currently have 10 of them running at the store, and while they are quiet, they are still significantly louder than say my deltec.

Worth noting also, I have had 10 running for 2 years, and have had to replace two pumps.

At the price point they are not the best option, and for a tank your size I would say that they are a rather poor choice.

The Aquamaxx WS-1 would be more than enough, not available to you though? It's quite quiet. It's pretty much overkill for my 105L system.

Ok, that is sad news. The only reason I was willing to pay that much was if it's quiet. That's my main concern!

I ran an old Euro-Reef Skimmer on this 7 gallon homemade reef a few years ago. I believe it was rated for a 90 gallon tank. The nano did pretty well with a big skimmer.
