Hi guys

I've just installed this and it's been running a few days and I'm already delighted with it performance, and silence.

I know it has a run in period but I just wondered if you could point me in the right direction to dial in the perfect settings to get the best Skim. It's already producing some foul smelling liquids (which my old skimmer never did!) but you can't beat advice from people running these already.

I have is set in around 22cm of water in sump of my tank as per instructions.

The 2 main controls are:

1. the tall pipe with open / close for water level adjustment - were should I set this etc.
2. The small screw that controls air flow - best full open, part closed...?

I keep reading the instructions but I suppose each tank is different and is always difficult until you get used to new pieces of equipment.

Thanks in advance

So the water level pipe has two adjustments... 1) turn the actual pipe for large adjustments and 2) turn the dial on top of the pipe for micro adjustments. I never actually mess much with the fine adjustment dial. I can easily set my water level with just the main adjustment. Set the water level at about the the point where the cup attaches to the body. The water level is where the larger bubbles start... you can usually see a "line" through the body or cup neck. If you are seeing it in the cup neck, then you obviously have it set too high.

For air flow, I close the dial all of the way then open it about 2-3 full turns. This should be a good starting point for you.

Thanks for that Broadfield- starts me on the right track

The instructions said to run it in with the large pipe fully open (with the hole pointing to the skimmer) but when I did this the water level was nowhere near the top so I had gradually been closing it so I assume that's ok and now set up as you said.

Just as a matter of interest were does the water exit the skimmer? Originally I assumed out of the hole but if that's closed or partially closed..

I had the c Skim 1800 before which was much different.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, I'm quickly getting very frustrated getting my Nyos 160 to skim. My sump is 10.5 inches deep so per the instructions I've raised the skimmer up 2.5 inches so it's right at 8 inches deep in the sump. I'm having two issues, first I must totally close the tube hole and just about totally close the open/close valve to get the water height even with the cup attach point, this just doesn't seem right. Second, at this water level I can't get enough bubbles, large or small to break the top of the skimmer, cup attached. Completely closing the air only raises the water, opening the air just 1/2 turn immediately causes the water level to drop 1-3 inches. The tank is new, 525 liter reefer, just one week with fish, could it just be there isn't anything to skim?

Hi G5flier

One of the first things I learned from Red Sea when I set up my tank was that a skimmer will only produce skim if there is stuff in the water to take out so if it's a new tank that could be part of the problem. Also try dialling it in around 2 hours or so after feeding when there may be stuff to skim out.

I set my NYOS up and it's been running now for about 6 days. It didn't do much for the first day or so but now it's working away producing Skim.

To set the water height I turned the main tube for 'rough' adjustment towards closed. I don't know how much it's closed because I can't seem to see it but I turned it until the water height was around were the cup fastens on. I had the air partially closed, just a bit. Pretty much what Broadfield said above.

Over the last few days I've fiddled around making slight adjustments to the water height with the fine adjustment and now the air valve if fully open and it's churning out the sludge. Sometimes nothing is produced and the bubbles are clear but then it changes generally after feeding etc.

With my previous skimmer (C Skim 1800) it took me a few months to get the feel for it, and you just make small adjustments here and there. It seems like you always messing with it. The NYOS is however no comparison and in a different league and I'm only just starting to fine tune it.

Also bear in mind that the skimmers can have a run in period from days to weeks depending....

Shaun, thanks for the reply and encouragement, I'm just going to give it some more time, betting at some point I'll be cursing when it needs to be emptied too frequently! Happy reefing.

Thanks everyone for your notes. I just got my Nyos. I followed everyone's instruction but it is weird that there is water overflow out of my tall pipe with open / close for water level adjustment. Does anyone has any idea? Thanks,

Somebody please help me as I’m new to this Hobby. I recently purchased the NYOS 160 for my tank. I have it setup and skimming but there Is a small problem.. there’s tons of micro bubbles coming out the exhaust and is making its way to my return pump up into the display tank. My poor fish need some solutions! I’ve broke in the sKimmer for about 24 hours now but recently turned it off because I don’t want to keep stressing my fish out. Please help them out! Thanks

Sounds like your skimmer still needs to break in. Have faith the micro bubbles will go away in a few days once skimmer is broken in.
