NYOS Quantum Thread!

2 weeks after having the NYOS Quantum 120, it's skimming better than ever. It was already skimming ~3 days in, but now, after 2 weeks, it's pulling quite a bit and has plenty of bubbles. The minute adjustments of the wedge pipe are so great. My other skimmers never had this super fine grained control. Getting it dialed in wasn't hard, just every day I would turn it 1/4 turn to get the water level right to where the cup meets the body. The bubbles are on full. Here's a photo from today, 2 days after cleaning it out:

I heard back from Ecotech today...

"Thank you for contacting EcoTech Marine. The NYOS skimmers are not designed to be turned off constantly. That said, if it is powered down, it may take a few minutes for it to start working properly again. That said, to resolve the issue, I would recommend having the skimmer be plugged into power all of the time."

So basically they are saying, don't shut it off and you won't have this issue. Well, that's helpful! Haha. I did reply back asking them how one is supposed to remove the skimmer cup for cleaning without shutting down the skimmer. Yes, I can adjust the skimmer down so that it does not flow into the cup, but that means I have to readjust it every time as well and with the size of the cup that would be happening a few times a week. I suppose I could just drain the cup into a bigger container, but I really shouldn't have to do that, IMO.

I think I will pull the unit out tonight and disassemble it and check for any issues.

On the positive side, it doesk skim very well, once you get it jump started.

I have the NYOS 160 and I have not got it up and running just yet. I hope I don't run into all these issues. Starting to wish I saw this thread before I bought mine. Once the new tank is up and running I'll report back with a skimmer update.

Thanks for sharing everyone.

I put my own bottle of unused No3P04-x on top of the lid, and it eventually fell into the water. The vibration is so strong that I guess it shook it off. I'm having to adjust the lid every 5 - 10 minutes. It's so loud that I can hear it from the other room. Has anyone else come across so much noise from the lid? I'm thinking of putting a small bead of silicon in the groove to help it out.
Thats crazy! Mine bottle never budged.

I had this issue as well. I wound up pulling it from the sump and runnning it in hot water and vinegar for a few hours. Now It sometimes still struggles at restart but 9 times out of 10 it fires back up without me having to blow in the tube. before the vinegar bath i had to blow eveytime.

I have the small bottle that came with the Red Sea mature kit. Maybe it's too small. But I put bigger bottles of things on top, and they still eventually got buzzed off. I wonder if something else weird is happening with my skimmer.

OK, That was definitley a small bottle. Mine was 500ml I think. Is the cup is twisted on good and tight?

I've had it tighter than it is now, just didn't want to overtighten. Maybe I'll try getting it really snug to see if that helps at all.

Tighter in theory should cut down on vibration. If mine gets louder Its usually because i didnt twist enough after last cleaning. Here's a video I just took of mine. Is yours louder? same?

Just tried tightening even more, but it's pretty much all the way tight. My sound is the same as yours! Though when the lid is rattling, it's crazy loud. I can hear it from my kitchen haha.

Yeah, I guess try the rubber band. the hum of the pump is what it is but rattling would bug me too.

I’ve got a 160 and haven’t had a problem with the lid except when it’s too full and starts over flowing. [emoji849] I do have problems getting it to start up if I haven’t cleaned it for quite awhile.

Excuse my ignorance. I’m getting ready to go big (150 gal) from an AIO and I️ was considering this skimmer due to it being very quiet. But with all the reading I️ have done on here the past 2 years, I️ have never read about a slimmer having problems starting up. Is this a normal issue with skimmers, or just this brand?

I have been happy with my 120 so far. It is slightly audible but it makes less noise than my MP10 and I haven't had any trouble with the lid rattling. The only problem I had was some chipping where the skimmer cup attaches to the body, but ecotech support was extremely helpful and had a replacement part in the mail less than 12 hours after I emailed them.

I have 160 for a year and half. After a long period of no cleaning the skimmer I had it not primed itself everytime it restarts. Figured out to blow into venturi line as well. But after deep cleaning for 2 months I didn't have the self prime failed on me again. Other than that it is a pretty solid skimmer. I did buy a spare cup cap and sent the old one to AVAST for skimmer neck swabbie retrofit. Yes I am lazy cleaning the cup every other day.

Worst thing I have for my 160 : I used to have a fuge light next to skimmer chamber. And yes I didn't block the light so fuge light shined into skimmer and grown lots of algae inside the main adjustable tubing. this tubing is no way to break into parts for cleaning, so my tube is full of filth now. I started to block the light from fuge 2 months ago and now the algae inside the skimmer started to died off. But it is still ugly...
