There should be both a divider and sponge. Do you have the older body or the new G2 body?

First, you'll want to run with the divider. Second, place enough carbon in the lower portion so that it's compacted in the lower portion. I'm not sure what you're running for carbon but I like the Nyos and Red Sea brands. I run 500ml of carbon in my 200-gallon system, so you may find that even 1000ml is a lot.

If you're going to run the whole 2000ml then just remove the divider and fill it up to the top (or within a few mm of the top).
